The Reality Check

● ICT in education is the norm and not an option

● The world is looking towards India for deliverance because of its demographic dividend

● Approx 50 crore youth are going to enter the professional stream in the next decade

● At least 17.5 crore of them need to be proficient in computer usage

● Computer literacy in India is at an abysmal low of < 7%

● Commendable efforts of the govt. & educational institutes are only partially yielding results, it at all

The Myth

The personal computer will be replaced by tablets and mobiles

● Saturation – evolution of software and hardware means PCs don’t need to be replaced as often

● Misinterpretation of trends (2013-2014 Source: Gartner)

● Statcounter browser usage - 71.89% desktop, 22.42% mobiles and 5.69% tablets

● More tablets were being sold but rate of growth slowed down from 87.1% to 28.2% y-on-y

● Increased growth was in low end tablets market which no where match up to PC power

● Horses for the courses

● Tablets/phablets are an added convenience

● Writing, coding, editing images, doing CAD work, doing other productive work — or even playing PC games — there’s a good chance you depend on a mouse and keyboard

● Agreed - Lines are blurring between PCs and mobile devices but the PC form can’t be replaced yet
