Remember the Ladies…    July  3,  1776

“I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And,

by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I

desire you would remember the ladies and be more

generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the

hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be

tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not

hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or

representation.”

In  a  le:er  dated  March  31,  1776,  Abigail  Adams  writes  to  her  husband,  John  Adams,  urging  him  and  the  other  members  of  the  Con4nental  Congress  not  to  forget  about  the  na4on's  women  when  figh4ng  for  America's  independence  from  Great  Britain.

Not  like  the  brazen  giant  of  Greek  fame,  With  conquering  limbs  astride  from  land  to  land;  Here  at  our  sea-‐washed,  sunset  gates  shall  stand

A  mighty  woman  with  a  torch,  whose  flame  Is  the  imprisoned  lightning,  and  her  name

Mother  of  Exiles.    From  her  beacon-‐hand

Glows  world-‐wide  welcome;    her  mild  eyes  command

The  air-‐bridged  harbor  that  twin  ci&es  frame.  "Keep  ancient  lands,  your  storied  pomp!"  cries  she

With  silent  lips.  "Give  me  your  &red,  your  poor,  Your  huddled  masses  yearning  to  breathe  free,

The  wretched  refuse  of  your  teeming  shore.  Send  these,  the  homeless,  tempest-‐tost  to  me,

I  liY  my  lamp  beside  the  golden  door!"
