Abstract

Abstract. It consists of: Scope of the study: the use of ‘Musical Chairs’ game as a

teaching strategy to improve young learners listening skill. Itis an action research, involving 20 students from Ansa schoolSemarang. In analyzing the data, I used a descriptivequalitative and simple quantitative measurement.

Purpose of the study: to describe how “Musical Chairs” gamecan be used to improve young learners’ listening skills.

Result of the study: this research concluded that studentswho were taught by using ‘Musical chairs’ game achievedsignificant improvement in the pre-test and post-test inwhich they enjoyed having teaching in the form of game.

Research Problem: After consulting to the teacher, the fourth grade students of Ansa School Semarang have less motivation to study listening. The problem of this study is:

How can “Musical Chairs” game be used to improve young learners’ listening skills for the fourth graders of Ansa School Semarang?

Research Objectives

The objective of the study is to describe how “Musical Chairs” game can be used to improve young learners’ listening skills for the fourth graders of Ansa School Semarang.

Literature Review

A literature review is a description of the literature relevant to a particular field or topic. ‘Literature’ covers everything relevant that is written on a topic: books, journal articles, newspaper articles, theses and dissertations, etc.

For example, here in this journal, I referred to some authors like Harmer (2001), Berman (2011), Mills (2000).

Research Methods

In applying this action research, I followed severalstages that were conducted in two cycles; cycle 1and cycle 2. Each cycle consisted of four stages;planning, action, observation, and reflection.

There were some instruments which were used inconducting this study.They are test items, a questionnaire and field notes

Discussion and Findings

The analysis of the data showed that there was a significantdifference of the students’ achievement in the pre-test and post-test. The students’ achievement in the post-test (87.5%) was higherthan that of the pre-test (61.5 %). The improvement of the scoresshowed that the students possibly enjoyed having teaching in theform of game.

The result of the questionnaire showed that 85% of the studentsassumed that listening was important in their English lesson (itemnumber 2). They thought that “Musical Chairs” game can improvetheir listening skill (73%).

Conclusion

I conclude that “Musical Chairs” game can improve young learners’ listening skill of the fourth graders in Ansa School Semarang. It is proven by the significant result of the post-test that was higher (87.5%) than the pre-test (61.5%).
