A music video theorist who believed that music videos are recycled styles that contain an abundance and overload of information which contain opinions of young male fantasies.

Music videos contain the following common features: girls, wealth, power and speed and usually have clichd imagery.

Music videos portray provocative imagery where women are explicitly objectified and highly sexualised which is becoming the norm for audiences to see especially in Rap Hip Hop music videos.

Example music video that supports Michael Shores Theory:-

Keith Negus

His theory challenged the idea and connection/link between popular music and youth culture.

His view was that popular music was performed, appreciated and listened to by an ageing demographic of people and opposed the argument that says that popular music is intrinsically rebellious.

Example of a pop music video that is harmless and not rebellious; about a pop artist who is young, care free and wants some fun.

Roland Barthes

His theory was that media texts can either be open or closed and believed that there are five codes that appear in the narratives of music videos to drive the action forward. These include:

The Hermeneutic Code- the voice of truth throughout a music video to create a mystery so the audience feel interested, excited and intrigued to watch the music video.

The Enigma Code- empirical voice which offers the audience a cliff-hanger which can be utilised in music videos to create suspense and tension leaving active audiences to question what they have watched. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2vjPBrBU-TM- Sia (Chandelier) creates questions like: Why is the girl dancing around an abandoned dirty room? Why is she wearing very little clothing? What is the purpose of the song? What pleasure does the audience receive from her music? What message is Sia trying to communicate with her audiences? E.g. has she got post-feminist tendencies.

The Symbolic Code- voice of symbols which is used in music videos to create a contrast where new interpretations are created from the original conflicting ideas.

The Culture Code- voice of science which analyses audiences ideology and knowledge which makes the music video seem more realistic and enjoyable for the audience.

The Semantic Code- the voice of the person in the lyrics which create meaning through symbolism and connotations which the story suggests which therefore punctuate the narrative.
