Iconography Particular genres may have their own style & iconography.

Iconography –

The prodigy are an electronic dance music group which was formed with the rave scene which has implemented all of their music videos including ‘out of space’. Rave is very prominent in this music video and follows conventions of a rave, electronic culture and genre.

Locations- The prodigy use different locations based on the lyrics of the song and what they want to portrait. However the group itself still aims top have locations that are unique and also quit weird because of the style of their music. You wouldn’t expect to have a electronic dance group use common locations that spread over other genres because they aim to have a unique sound which they emphasis with the locations.

Color- The prodigy like the location try to mix up the colors used in their video, however they use unique colors all the time with a lot of the videos to compliment the rave scene

Clothes- the clothes again compliment the rave seen and electronic dance culture. A lot of the costumes and clothing are very out there and eccentric like the groups personality, ‘Out of space’ is a good example of this

Dancing and performance- Dancing is very similar in all of their videos, all of it is rave dancing which is again very eccentric. A lot of their performances are weird and very unique and are not the sort of videos you would get in other genres

Relationship between music and visuals

Tempo- All of the Prodigy’s songs have a high tempo as they aim to perform these songs to massive dance and rave crowds so they aim to keep the intensity up all the time. However they do drop in tempo just to emphasis the pieces of high tempo

Rhythms- The Prodigy are formed on intense rhythms with heavy drum beats, one of their first songs recorded as a group was actually called “We eat rhythm” which was later brought out on cassette.

Pitch- The Prodigy in most of their songs will have high a low pitches which can be extremely effective in keeping a high intensity and keeping the listener interested and into the music throughout and not get bored of a very repetitive sound.

Target audienceProdigy have a large target audience as they are constantly attracting new fans as well as the older fans of the 90’s generation when they began recording. The electronic dance scene has a massive following of loyal fans. The video doesn’t tailor to one age as the Prodigy is such an old and timeless band to those who enjoy rave music. Gender isn’t a problem for the prodigy as all their music isn’t gender specific. The Prodigy also don’t tailor to one ethnicity and have a worldwide fan base that has given them the ability to play gigs around the world all year round.

Forms and conventionsLocation/set- there are multiple locations in this video and like most of the prodigy music video locations they are very peculiar and unique. In this video its random stretches of roads, fields etc. These add to the unique style that rave and electronic dance brings

Costume- The unique concepts are continued with the costumes. The rave scene itself its own style of clothing and fashion but Prodigy normally take this even further and wear very ‘out there’ and garish clothes. In this video one of the members is dressed in a colorful one piece covered in paint with a gas mask. This had never been seen in other genre videos when it was first released. It shocked people and either drew people in or was quite of putting.

Editing/cuts and effectsCuts- cuts are prominent throughout the video as they keep with the pace of the song and can be effective when trying to increase intensity by simply adding more cuts between scenes which is done very effectively in this video

Effects- This song has a massive amount of editing and effects and are used for the whole video. The constant use of vibrant colors adds to the happy and excited atmosphere they try to present to the audience.

ConventionsThe prodigy don’t really use lyrics in their visuals and don’t really include voyeurism apart from a small amount of videos because of the songs theme. The Prodigy stay strong to their genre. They are always making videos that are implemented by the rave scene. There is a bit of star iconography and Liam Howlett has been formed into the main person in the group because he is the main part in a lot of their videos. Intertextuality isn’t used a huge amount as their videos are always different and unique. However close ups are frequently used
