Music 1313: Research Strategies for Weekly
Assignment 1
Music 1313 Study Questions
Week 1-2: Listening to jazz;
Practice/ Conditions/ Economics; Early Jazz (Part 2)
Test your knowledge of musical terms. Take a look at the list (below) of general
and jazz-specific terms. Write your own short definitions for all the terms you
know. Then check the sources provided for each term. Does everyone agree? Note
the areas of consensus and disagreement you find. Continue with the terms
that don’t have provided sources. Define them yourself, if possible, and then find
the best (most cogent, most reliable, most concise) definitions. Note where you
found them (i.e., write down the citation) and bring them to class. Class discussion
will focus both on the content of your findings and on the process of finding and
evaluating sources. Where is the best place to start: Google? Google
Scholar? Oxford Music Online? Another source?
