HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Petaling Jaya was developed in the 1950s but only granted city status in

2006. SS2 being one of the most establish

commercialised hubs in Petaling Jaya. The area now which contains many houses and shop lots was once part

of the 1200 acre rubber estate. In addition to the

modernisation of the area, there are also two primary

schools and one high school in that area. Which were founded in the 1970s.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

SS2 has been the place where I grew up in, my

present feelings towards the place has very much changed since then.

STRUCTURE & LAYOUT

STRUCTURE & LAYOUT

Layout of SS2, Petaling Jaya

STRUCTURE & LAYOUT

• Typically 3-4 stories

• Variety ranging from F&B stalls to phone stores.

• With that, layout of shops varies depending on the purpose

STRUCTURE & LAYOUT

• For coffee shops, they usually occupy corner units as it is bigger in size.

• To accommodate the amount of customers they receive daily.

• Seating areas are arranged in social distance ( 4-7 ft) so customers will not have to invade other customer’s personal space while dining.

STRUCTURE & LAYOUT

• As for the other stores, they will occupy the middle shops.

• To be able to present and sell products so not much space is needed.

• Shops aren’t too big therefore they will not get any noise interrupting the conversation between salesperson and customer so they will both get their feedback.

• If more space is needed, they can rent the floor above and extend their business upstairs.

SS2 Murals

It was a wall art competition held in SS2 which was held in November 2014. 9 back lanes were selected

around SS2, and the artists had to go through a panel of four consultants with their initial

submission. The theme was “Bestnya Malaysiaku”, and they had to design a mural which screams that

theme.

The two artist that goes by the name “The Two Queens” are Ellie Yong

and Deborah Tan. Ellie mentioned in an interview how the mural was about “Preserving peace in a chaotic world is like keeping a

lantern burning in the dark, blossoming for those who can find

strength to forgive the past, and look to tomorrow. This painting tells of the beauty of a peaceful Malaysia in all

its fragile wonder.”

TYPES & DESCRIPTION OF MURAL PAINTINGS

According to the artists of this mural painting titled “Stay under the Roof”,

is inspired by how our diverse country reflects the characteristics

of the tradition and culture of Malaysia. In the mural, you can see traditional buildings and the “new era of building blocks”, it’s to show

Malaysia in the olden days until today’s achievement despite the

cultural differences. In conclusion of this mural, it is suppose to represent racial harmony, regardless who your

neighbours are, we all live “under the same roof” in Malaysia.

TYPES & DESCRIPTION OF MURAL PAINTINGS

There isn’t much information about this mural or the artist, but non-

verbally, from my perspective, I think it talks about how children are lively

and working adults aren’t. The working adults are shielding

themselves from the rain while the children in the mural are casually running around without worries.
