DESCRIPTION

In the 21st century, the world has become a global village. New cities are emerging on the world globe. Beside that, existing cities are developing & expanding rapidly. In this respect, the management of municipal solid waste is becoming very important factor in the development of a nation & society. It needs a combination of both administrative & motivational forces to implement a successful municipal waste system. Developed countries have done a lot in this respect & trying to reduce their waste generation. Countries are moving towards disposable & tin food to minimize their waste generation. New techniques are being implemented in today’s world to successfully manage waste & garbage. New techniques in Landfill sites, composting & GTS have been introduced to manage waste effectively & economically. More focus has been drawn towards generation of energy from waste including thermal energy, biogas which makes a sustainable development in the society.Karachi is the biggest & most densely populated city of the country. Being a financial hub, people from all over the country migrate to the city to run their business. Comprising of 3600Sq Km area, the city alone produces around 8000 Tones of Solid waste daily. The municipal waste management of the city has become a challenge for Sindh government & local city government of Karachi. There are 19 towns &several independent authorities in the city. The city waste management has many weaknesses in its services & planning& there is great potential for improvement, in the municipal services of the city. The purpose of this presentation is to conduct a brief study on the Municipal waste management of Gulistan-e- Jauhar Block 2, The project is designated to me by my course teacher Mr. Muhammad Khalid to enhance my practical knowledge in this course & I am very thankful to him for the same. This report shall cover the basic handling of municipal solid waste generated by houses & some shops. It includes the collection system, its temporary storage & then its final dumping at the Landfill site. (The author of ppt is an MBA student at Institute of Business Management, Karachi)

WASTE COLLECTION

PRIMARY DATA: There are approximately 1000 houses Each house is generating 2.5kg of solid waste

per day The collection system is door to door collecting

system comprises of donkey car Vehicles Each vehicle has 2 plastic bags for collecting

waste, each of 80 kg capacity 6 vehicles are used to collect the waste each

day Each vehicle is collecting about 400kg of Solid

waste

WASTE COLLECTION

The waste is collected in a traditional manner using donkey cars

The waste collectors reach at the door step of each house & collect the waste

At the same time, they segregate the waste & store the recycle able material in a separate plastic bag

WASTE SEGRIGATION AT THE SOURCE

The collected Solid waste consists of: Kitchen waste (mostly biological) Thermal Waste Recycle able waste Inert

About 75% of waste consists of: Kitchen waste Remaining of Vegetables & fruits Garden & yard Inert Remaining of cocked food

Remaining 25% is recycle-able items which consist of the following items:

Glass Animal Bones White paper Plastics Disposable bottles of water & soft drinks Plastic ( hard & soft) Rubber Tire Leather Bread Tube Human hairs

WASTE TRANSPORTATION & DISPOSAL

The waste is transported to the disposal site in a vehicleThe waste is disposed off at a nearby disposal site adjacent to the vicinity of Karachi UniversityThe waste is re-segregated at the dumping siteThe recycle able waste is taken away by the waste collectors The waste is transported to the secondary dumping site at Gulshan-e-Iqbal by KMC Trucks & Tractors

WASTE TRANSPORTATION & DISPOSAL

The dumping site at Gulshan consist of waste coming from Gulshan Town

ENVIRONMENTAL & HEALTH ISSUES

The dumping sites are open to air & are serious danger to the residence of the nearby residential areas

The waste reach at the roads & pedestrian paths, effecting the city beauty

Birds & flies fly over the waste, becoming a source of risk to Arial accidents

The burning of waste emits CO2, NOx, depleting our Ozone layer & increasing global warming

Page 26: Municipal & Solis Waste Management

BURNING OF WASTE EMITS CO,CO2 & OTHER DANGEROUS GASSES

Page 27: Municipal & Solis Waste Management

THE FLYING BIRDS CAN BECOME A SOURCE OF HUGE AIRPLANE ACCIDENTS

Page 28: Municipal & Solis Waste Management

SUGGESTIONS & IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

Short Term Strategy: Covered waste collection bags Personnel Protection Top Covered Dumping Site Rapid movement of KMC trucks for collection of

waste Increase in the salary of waste collectors Transforming the treatment of recycle-able waste

under KMC

Page 29: Municipal & Solis Waste Management

SUGGESTIONS & IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

Medium & Long Term Strategy: Better waste collecting vehicles

Converting secondary dumping site into GTS with modern facility of waste segregation

Proper landfill site operation with additional facility of composting, waste to energy, hazardous material disposal & bio gas formation
