Technology Presentation2/17/12
Teacher Website Creation Using OnCourse Systems
Mary Manion
Introduction
• Thank you and welcome!• Growing up as a teacher with technology- my
background.• Look out! I am self-taught. (Most techs are!) • Old ways of pages vs. new. No more HTML!• I am a learner just like you. (Try stuff!) • I also know things (like you do!) and like to share. • Arrow means handout available!
Today’s Goals!
• To foster pride in what we are already doing.• To look at our past and ideas for the future.• To understand why a teacher website is
important.• To learn some basics of an OnCourse page.• To learn Do’s & Don’ts• To learn more ways to integrate technology in
the future through our pages and more!
Accentuate The Positive! If you wanna hear my storyThe settle back and just sit tightWhile I start reviewin'The attitude of doin' right
You've got to accentuate the positiveEliminate the negativeAnd latch on to the affirmativeDon't mess with Mister In-Between
Survey Says!Responses
• We have a staff of 80 people including administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff.
• 38 people quickly responded to the survey!• 17 were K-4; 15 were 5-8; 5 were K-8
Survey Says!“CBAM”
• Did you guess that the first two questions were for my PSU Class?
• “CBAM” means “Concerns-Based Adoption Model.”
• CBAM can help us figure out where we are on a continuum of change- and after all technology is constantly changing.
Mt. Ephraim Self-Assessment
• Shows that the staff has a middle to high level of adoption of technology ideas.
• It show that the staff has a lot of routine use of technology.
• Further questions show that there are concerns about change- how to do it even if wanted to. And how much time and support it would take.
Staff Websites on OnCourse
• 50/50. However some probably do not need websites.
• Some have not had time and need some help getting started.
• Some need some time or help updating.• Some want to do more with web technology
and want to learn how. • Results available including PIE CHARTS!

• Think about if it may be time to update. • Remember that your old ideas may be out
there. • Let’s learn from history….
THE WAYBACK MACHINE
Let’s Look At What We Have
• Each teacher has a site reserved.• Limited number of sites. • About 50/50 complete vs. need work.• Would like to have SOMETHING on all. • Future: changes to main page.• Future: addition of staff pictures• Future: ideas for policies & more technology-
integrated sites.
OnCourse vs Other Ways
• OnCourse is user-friendly, fast and easy!• OnCourse has many examples to follow.• OnCourse has some limitations– Can’t download archive– Property of site– Layout
• May want to combine OnCourse with other methods
OnCourse Basics: Why You Can Do It TODAY!

• Look at other sites.• Do some planning on paper! • Read the manual.• Try It Before You Buy It! Do not publish before
you are happy with it. • Start small. Use other sites as your template. • Ask for help. • I am here to help TODAY!
Other Places to Make Websites

Kick It Up A Notch!

More Web Gadgets for the FutureTech Integration You Are Asking For!
• Podcasting• Blogging• Uploading Pictures• Uploading Videos• Posting PowerPoint Presentations• Making Video Tutorials• Linking to other sources• Teaching through your website
Fifty Ways!
• I have a way I have found to do things that work for me right now- but for every way I know there are at least 50 others!
• Some are not worth the time unless you are already using the technology for other things.
• You must weigh effort versus payback
