The Story of the MongolsBy: Alana Stillitano

A long time ago…. in a land called Mongolia located above China, a boy named Temujin was born.

When his father was killed, Temujin’s step-brother tried to take his place as ruler. But Temujin knew that he was stronger and killed his brother to prove that he

would be a good leader.

As Temujin got older he led large armies and took over much land. He gave himself the new name of Genghis Khan.

The Mongol army was incredible at shooting bow and arrows. As well as fighting while on horses.

Even though that there was a large army, they could move very quickly.

When they were fighting an enemy, they would split up into groups so they would not be surrounded. When it was time to fight, they would surround the enemy and

attack quickly.

Sometimes they would herd oxen and horses to confuse their enemy.

They did not like hand-to-hand combat and much prefered to fire at enemies with their bow and arrows.

The Mongols lived the nomadic lifestyle.

When they went to take control of Russia, the soldiers fought when the weather was extremely cold. This brought the element of surprise to the Russians as

usually it was a period of time that was off limits for fighting.

They were almost always outnumbered in battles.

They also used catapults in their fighting.

The Mongols war strategies helped them conquer more land.

And more land...

And more land...

And more land...

Until finally, at the peak of the Mongol empire...

It was divided between Genghis Khan’s four sons.
