DESCRIPTION
Young children work hard at play. You watch them and you’ll see they use it to work out solutions to small problems. They use it to learn how to negotiate with other children and they use it to invent scenes and stories that germinate purely from their imagination. Play is one of the vital signs of health in a child… but many children are being denied access to the time to play. More time to play and be physically active, in the critical years when lifelong habits are formed, has a huge pay off later in life for themselves (and for our society). Because of rising obesity the children of our generation may be the first in 200 years to experience a shorter lifespan than their parents. Research directly links play to a child’s ability not only to be creative but to prosper academically in literacy and numeracy. In the imagination economy, which is here now, we need people that can do things that can’t be outsourced. Something that’s hard to automate and delivers on the growing demand for products and services based on design and customised solutions. In many ways, how we cater for creativity and play will shape the future prosperity of our society. Young children work hard at play. We work hard to make it the best it can be.
