Important Attributes: New England Colonies (1)
The New England colonies specifically Boston, Massachusetts was dependent on fishing for
economic prosperity. Due to the ports in Massachusetts fishing and trade were easier to
achieve.

The New England colonies were also known for their substance farming and self-sufficiency. Foods,
clothing and shoes were all manufactured by the colonist, but they did get things shipped from
England if it didn’t grow in the Americas.

The New England colonies were known for their religious pious. The pilgrims and puritans settled in the New England colonies because it allowed
them religious freedom and freedom from persecution by the Church of England.
Impact of Triangular Trade, the Great
Awakening, and the Enlightenment on the New
England colonies
a) Triangular Trade- The New England Colonies were heavily involved with trading rum, timber, and molasses ,which allowed them to join the triangular trade system. Ports were also important and made the New England colonies wealthy with the influence of slave trading.
b) The Great Awakening- The colonist were strong believers in the pure intentions of Christ. The Great Awakening allowed the colonist to think about how they could influence and change society with “revivals”.
c) The Enlightenment- The enlightenment allowed for New England colonists to use both religion and logic to influence the government.

The middle colonies were known for a diversified economy. The had both an industrial and a
agricultural ways that helped them survive. Textiles such as iron and grains were both apart of their
society.
AND
The middle colonies were known for their variety of jobs. The people in the middle colony didn’t
bring their families from England because they had to work for the people who sent them to the
Americas. Farmers, blacksmiths, and tailors were just some of the jobs that the people of the Middle
colonies occupied.

The middle colonies were known as the “Breadbasket Colonies”. They produced
more food than the other North American Colonies due to their fertile
soil.

Colonies
a) Triangular Trade- Economically triangular trade was a huge influence on the Middle Colonies because of their ability to trade agriculture, iron, and fur.
b) The Great Awakening- The Quakers; people who opposed violence and war ,settled in the Middle Colonies which caused religion to influence every part of daily life.
c) The Enlightenment-The Quakers used their enlightenment thinking and religious freedom to make the government. Tolerance was a big governmental policy and all religions and ethnicities were accepted.

Slaves were used for labor in the Southern colonies which allowed
for their economy to flourish.

The Southern Colonies produced many cash crops due to their plantations which made them wealthy.
They produced and traded things such as cotton, tobacco, coffee and sugar.

In the Southern Colonies plantations were used greatly for agricultural growth and trade which
allowed for economic growth. Growing vast amounts of crops allowed the land owners to
become wealthy along with the colonies.

Colonies
a) Triangular Trade- This system of trade allowed crops, slaves, and other “commodities” at that time to be traded. The trading of slaves kept the economic growth of the Southern colonies flourishing.
b) The Great Awakening- People in southern colonies were traditionalist and worshiped together. Religious freedom that was brought up by the Great Awakening allowed for branches of Christianity such as Baptists and Methodist to grow.
c) The Enlightenment-The southern colonies initiated the idea of dividing up power in the government due to enlightenment thinking.
