MOJO Conference

○ It was held at the Dublin Convention Centre on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th of March, organised by Innovation Lead in RTE, Glen Mulcahy.

○ It was the first conference of it’s kind and was aimed at mobile journalism, filmmaking, photography and story telling.

○ The event was aimed at journalists from print, media and radio.

The Power of a mobile device

○ The weekend revolved around mobile devices and particularly the iphone.

○ It was stressed that as a mobile journalist you do not need a high tech camera to capture amazing moments at high quality.

○ Through workshops, the delegates were taught how to shoot a film on an iphone, take pictures and edit them to an incredibly high standard.

Page 4: Mobile journalism convention

Our Job

○ We were part of the social media team.

○ We attempted to get Mojocon trending on Twitter which was in the top 3 for the majority of the weekend.

○ Our primary task was to film video Vox-pop’s asking interviewees their name, company/role, and their highlight of the conference

○ The filming was done using an iPhone

○ We were then to edit these using iMovie on the iPhones so they could be sent out on twitter

General Vibe after first morning

● Michael Rosenblum caused a major meltdown

telling everyone that professional journalism was

more or less heading for extinction

● Things got a little more hopeful later as other

speakers gave insights in coping with social media

Page 6: Mobile journalism convention

Positivity

There were many negative journalists at the MOJO convention, with the belief

journalism is dead and anyone can do it.

Sandra Quinn, journalist for the Avondhu newspaper & Jack Hollingsworth both

disagreed.

Workshop 4 iPhone Filmmaking

We were literally taught how to make a short film with an iPhone.

It was a very simple explanation with the use of a selfie stick and imovie.

Conrad Mess was the speaker and is the world’s most awarded iPhone filmmaker.

Me.S.S. Filmmakers.

“More than 1.8 billion photos are uploaded onto social media every day”

The Lumia v. the iPhone.

The Challenges

○ WiFi access at the Convention Centre was intermittent and unstable

○ Getting twitter to allow us to post videos only worked on some of the iPhones

○ The iRig microphones are omni-directional which meant they picked up every noise in their vicinity

○ We had no external light attached to the phones which restricted the locations that could be used for filming.
