Interesting Facts
1. Its name comes from an Indian word meaning "Father of
Waters"– Mississippi has seven state animals. (Bottlenosed dolphin, white-
tailed deer, a red fox, mockingbird, largemouth/black bass, spicebush swallowtail, honeybee and lastly a wood duck.)
– An estimated $500,000 in tax revenue goes to the clean up from hurricane Katrina
– Mississippi is the second largest gambling states after Nevada.

• Admitted to the United States on December 10th, 1817
• Hernando Desoto(Spain) founded the Mississippi River.
• On August. 29, 2005, Mississippi was hit by Hurricane Katrina, killing hundreds, mostly in
Harrison County.
Current Events
As we all know, there was a big oil spill along the Gulf of Mexico. Well some of that oil has leaked and spread to the coastline of Mississippi. The oil has caused some polution damage to the Mississippi River. Mississippi Senate has just resently passed a bill for the Auto Insurance Verification (Insurance Journal). Since Mississippi's climate is usually warm, they have year-round festivals. These festivals are a wonderful way to have a great time, eat unigue foods, and do some shopping.
