1975 – 1979 Cambodians endured genocide during the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot era this resulted in:
2 million deaths (25% of the population)
Every family lost at least one member
65% of the population is under 25 years of age
Poverty is widespread
Families in rural areas earn less than $2 dollars per day
80% of people live in rural areas
BACKGROUND
Background continued…..• 4.6 million people do not
have access to safe water
(33% of the population)
• Over 10,000 children die each year from diarrhoea caused by unsafe water , infected with E-coli which leads to dysentery and high child mortality

SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timely
Access to clean water
• Each water well costs £170
• Provides water for 4 families
• Wells have ceramic water filters so fuel for boiling can be conserved
• Each well takes 1 day to dig and employs 4 people
• Contractor is liable to repair the well for the first 2 years
• Villagers are taught how to care for their well
• Workshops teach young and old the importance of hygiene and washing hands with soap and water
Soroptomist Water Wells
A total of 8 water wells have been donated by Soroptimist International and include:
•SIGBI (1 well donated at Belfast Conference)
•SI Midland Arden (2 wells)
•SI Stourbridge (2 wells)
•SI Kidderminster (1 well)
•SI Leamington (1 well)
•SI Rhyl & District (1 well)

ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMME
ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMME• Rural schools are in open fields
• It is compulsory for families to provide uniforms and stationery for children to attend school
• Classrooms are overcrowded with 3 children to a desk and 60 children to a class
• There is no electricity or toilets
• No other equipment but blackboards and chalk
• Children complete either a morning or afternoon session
• Teachers do a double shift for less than £30 a month
• School Starter kits cost £15
