DESCRIPTION
Content Objectives outline specific learning targets in a lesson, but those who work with ELLs should also have Language Objectives for students to develop the four domains of language. Let’s look at how two simple apps – Skitch and ShowMe – can help students create content practicing their academic and conversational language skills.

Objectives
• We can discover the difference between content and language objectives
• We can formulate language objectives
• We can learn about Skitch and ShowMe, see student examples, and discuss how to apply the apps in our classroom
Content Objective vs Language Objective
• Content Objective: Guides lesson; gives purpose for content
• Language Objective: Identifies ways to use language to engage in content and meet content objectives; narrows focus
Formulate a Language Objective
1. Determine the language function(s) the ELL will need to participate in the lesson.
• A language objective will always have a Language Function.
2. Identify what language structure(s) the ELL will need to participate in the lesson.
•The Language Structure consists of three parts:
1. Sentence Starter
2. Key Vocabulary
3.“Real-Life” Mini Language Lesson
•CHOOSE one, two or all three of the above parts for a language structure.
