What is Medical Textile???

Combination of textile technology and medical sciences has resulted into a new field called medical textiles. Medical textiles also known as Healthcare Textiles. Medical Textiles is one of the most rapidly expanding sectors in the technical textile market.

Medical Textile Fiber

Fibers used in to medical application falls into two groups

1.Commodity fiber

2.Speciality fiber

Specialty Fiber

Collagen: This is obtained from cow skin.

Calcium Alginate: This is made from brown seaweed.

Chitosan

It is obtained from treating Chitin with alkali.

Requirements of textile material for medical applications• Biocompatible and sterile• Anti Allergenic and anti Bacterial• Good resistance to alkalis, acids and

micro-organisms• Good dimensional stability and elasticity • Free from contamination or impurities• Absorption / Repellency and air

permeability• White staple fiber • Biodegradable and Environment friendly

Classification of Medical textile The textiles used in medical and surgical

purposes can be classified as follows –Non implantable materials-Bandages,

plasters ,etc. –Extracorporeal devices-Artificial kidney,

Liver, and Lung. –Implantable materials-Vascular grafts,

Artificial ligaments, Artificial joints, etc. –Healthcare/hygiene products-bedding,

clothing, surgical gowns, cloths, wipes etc.

Non-implantable Materials

These materials are used for external applications on the body and may or may not contact with skin.

They are made from co-polymer of two a amino acids.

This includes wound care, bandages, plasters, pressure garments, orthopaedic belts etc.

Extra-Corporeal device

These are the artificial organs that are used to replace the diseased ones. There have been artificial kidney, liver and lung. The properties of such devices are vital.

Implantable Materials

These are the textile structures that can be used inside the human body for various purposes, such as replacement surgery(Vascular Grafts, Artificial Ligaments etc).

Sutures Surgical Sutures is a natural or synthetic

textile material used to body tissues together after an injury or surgery. Application generally involves using a needle with an attached length of thread. Ideal suture should

Physical and mechanical properties (adequate tensile strength, etc)

Handling properties (easy to handle) Biological properties (unfavorable for bacterial

growth) Biodegradation properties (absorbable; its tensile

strength loss must match the healing rate of the tissue to be closed)

Healthcare & hygienic products

An important area of textile is the healthcare and hygiene sector among other medical applications.

The range of products available for healthcare and hygiene is vast, but there typically used either in the operating theatre or in the hospital wards for hygienic, care and safety of the staff and patients.

They could be washable or disposable.

Which fiber are used to produce healthcare & hygienic product ??

Commonly used Natural fibers are cotton & silk.

Regenerated cellulosic fibers such as viscose rayon.

All fibers are used in medical application must be non-toxic, non-allergenic.

Conclusion Medical textiles are one of the dynamically expanding sectors & development of same is to convert painful days of patients into comfortable days.

As medical procedures continue & transform , the demand for textile materials is bound to grow & grow.
