What is community?
A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical
heritage.
Classical theory of community
In the classic sense, community is defined as a group of members who live in a certain locality
and interact with one another while sharing common interests or goals.
Classical theory of community
The concept of community has expanded over the last several decades, and three main types of communities are generally identified. These are geographic communities, communities of
interest and virtual communities.
The concept of Community
• According to the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition, the word "communities" has been used in the English language since the 14th century to refer to groups of people within a district who share characteristics and a sense of identity.
• The concept of community was expanded in the 19th century to describe the relationships of people within larger societies.
Geographic communities
• Geographic communities are those in which members share the same physical space. These are communities in the most traditional sense.
• Communities of interest are smaller groups within geographic communities. They consist of people who are united by a certain belief or goal.
Globalization
Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and
governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment
and aided by information technology.
Globalization
This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic
development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the
world.

political boundaries in order to pursue mutual interests or goals.
Elements of Virtual Community
• Grow naturally,
• Support sociability and participation,

• Provide different roles for members, and
• Link online collaboration to offline activities
Broadcast communities
Broadcast communities are groups of colleagues that share a common interest or purpose. When you create a broadcast community, you specify the type of community it is and who can join.
You can then use the broadcast community tools to quickly and easily communicate at once with online members of the broadcast community.
