What kind of Media institution might distribute your Media product and why?

Hollywood Distributors

Compass International Pictures:was an American film distribution company. Their most notable film release was Halloween in 1978, our inspiration for our film. The company closed down in 1981.

Warner Brothers:A huge Hollywood film company, distributing many world-wide hits and is also one of the biggest names in the world after numerous blockbusters.

Dreamworks:Also a major institute, once again distributing numerous amounts of blockbuster films, and a major rival for Warner Brothers.

British Distributors

Bwark Productions:Launched by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, produced The Inbetweeners series and movie, and is a production I have been studying.

Film4:Is a free digital television channel available in the United Kingdom, did not originally focus on broadcasting blockbusters, but nowadays broadcasts many mainstream Hollywood movies.

Studiocanal UK:a film distributor company working in the UK and Ireland. The company releases many films, including foreign language films.

So, introduce yourself…

Well, I’m Jacob and our film is a horror called ‘Appleby Street’…….(blah blah blah)…. Thanks for your time!

After pitching my film to the ‘dragons’ I had offers from all 6 institutes, and so I will evaluate each offer and decide which route to take.

Page 5: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Firstly, Dreamworks:Well, we are as you know a major force in this area and are well known on a global scale thanks to our numerous Blockbuster hits!

Of all these Blockbuster hits we have had, I am sure you will be most attracted to our horror films, such as a major favourite like Paranormal Activity.

“The film opened on September 25, 2009, to 12 theatre's taking $36,146 on its opening day and $77,873 on its first weekend for an average of $6,489 per venue. It took more success when it opened to 33 theatre's on October 1, 2009, doubling the box office reception, grossing $532,242 for an average of $16,129 per venue, bringing the 10-day total to $776,763.”“The film has grossed $107,918,810 domestically and $85,436,990 in foreign markets, with a total gross of $193,355,800.”

Dreamworks, thank you very much for your interest but I’m afraid I will have to decline as I don’t believe our film is ready to be shown to the global audience just yet.

SAY WHAT?!Your loss! I'm off home!

Next, Warner Brothers

At Warner Brothers, we have produced many, MANY, Blockbuster films that are arguably amongst the most favoured films of this current generation. Including…

Page 8: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

And I'm sure you’ll be impressed with such figures as these:

However, I am wiling to admit that we may not be the most experienced when it comes to distributing horror films. But with the resources available to us I hope we can adjust to your needs.

Page 9: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Thanks very much for the offer Warner Bro’s but due to your inexperience in producing horror movies I’m going to have to decline.

YOU MUST BE JOKING ME?! B*&@!”?$%^£*&S TO YOU ANYWAY!

Bwark, your turn

Bwark Productions may not be as high profile a name as other competitors like Warner Bros and Dreamworks, but we are an up and coming success.Highlighted with our recent success in our Inbetweeners movie and series, winning numerous awards in one of our first ever films!

Page 11: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Although we specialise in comedy films and series, we fully believe that we are more than capable of adjusting to a horror genre; and also, just looking at our statistics for the Inbetweeners movie highlights the success we have on a relatively limited budget!

Country United KingdomLanguage EnglishBudget £3.5 millionBox office £45,028,695

I'm afraid I am going to have to decline your offer, Bwark, as I feel that you are predominantly a comedy based production, and although your success at a low budget was very persuausive, I feel that the genre is just too contrasting to ours.

Page 12: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Film 4…

Us at Film4 did not originally focus on distributing ‘Blockbuster’ films, and so I believe we can relate to your low-profile film.

The fact that we now successfully also distribute these ‘Blockbuster’ films, I feel, highlights our diversity and adaptability to distribute different films.

Our channel is also a FREE digital TV channel, allowing all viewers to see our films.

Page 13: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

A very tempting offer, but I fear that perhaps you may not be able to give us an appropriate airing time on your channel and so therefore viewers will not be enticed. And also, it seems as though your audience now expect Blockbuster hits from your channel now, and I’m not quite sure our film can compare to those that you now view.

Next, Studiocanal

We have produced horror films similar to yours such as; ‘Don’t be afraid of the dark’, and, ‘The Awakening’. We would be a brilliant fit for you as

we release many films, including foreign language films. This range of diversity displays our differing range of films we are able to distribute. Also, the categorised ‘Aficionado’s’ films we produce, I believe are similar to your product.

Page 15: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Thanks a lot for your offer, Studiocanal. This is a very good offer and appeals greatly to my product, however there are a few concerns; I’m not sure if my product really does fit into your categorised films as I think that my product differs quite significantly to the horror films that you have distributed, and also, I don’t believe that we would get quite as much viewing being under your brand name as we could get under another. So I'm sorry but it’s a no.

You’ve missed a great opportunity here my friend! You’ll regret this!

And finally, Compass International Pictures

I know that Compass International Pictures is closed down, but I am willing to re-open especially for your product, with the exact same intentions as we had for our previous films. One of which I know will appeal to you; ‘Halloween’!!!!!!

Page 17: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

In re-opening, we believe that we are the perfect institution for your product as we can see great similarities between our favoured horror film, Halloween, and your product.

We believe that we have the proven track record of producing low budget films and creating success, again highlighted in ‘Halloween’, and also, we know that if you were to go with us we are more than capable of gaining the publicity and attention needed to the appropriate target audience in order to sell you film.

Page 18: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Winner!Thank you Compass International Pictures, I have decided to accept your offer, and look forward to working with you in the distributing of our film, especially you Theo Paphitis.

WOOP WOOP!

Page 19: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Why I went with Compass International Pictures…

It offered the best in the terms of the conventions of a horror movie, as in the making of our film, I used ‘Halloween’ as an inspiration for the storyline and characters in the film.

Because of this, they have the experience I would want, meaning they will have the best possible resources to provide for my film.

Page 20: Media evaluation q3 dragons den

Similarities In their film, ‘Halloween’, they too use the

mask and knife in the film as we do in ours.

FundingAs Compass International Pictures are unlikely to be able to provide the necessary funding, I will have to look for some sources of funding….

The National Lottery is a British funding, and show favouritism towards British films. It has also funded many successful films. This would be good for our target audience as this is a more mainstream funding and we are trying to portray a typical mainstream horror genre.

First Light are extremely helpful in aiding young people develop their skills, as they focus on funding beginner film makers, encouraging the whole situation as we will be developing the film. This would be favourable in our funding choice as it clearly puts emphasis on helping people like me and also has the required demands I would want to see to help the distribution of my film.
