Media Education
• Media education is a generic term for different forms of education about
the media, journalism, mass communication and its allied subjects.
• Media education is the process of teaching and learning of the entire
areas communication.
• Media education is the study, learning and teaching of, and about, the
modern media of communication and expression as a specific and
autonomous area of knowledge within education theory and practice,
distinct from their use as aids for the teaching and learning of other areas
of knowledge, such as mathematics, science and geography- UNESCO,
1973.

What ODL contributes?
• Out of 21.1% GER in higher education, 3.5 million students enrolled
in the open and distance institutions that comprises of 12% of the
total enrolment of 29.6 million in higher education in the year 2012-
13.
• About 44% enrollments in distance education are female students
and 80% students are enrolled in the undergraduate level
programmes.
• Through- 14 Open Universities + more than 190 dual mode
universities.
• In schooling level except state open schools, cumulative enrolment at
NIOS is 2.71 Million (Secondary - 46%, Senior Secondary - 49% &
Vocational - 5%). NIOS is the largest Open Schooling System in the
world.

• Enhance the skill of in-service media professionals
• Scale with quality
• Flexibility in completion of the courses
• Availability of cost effective media education
• Access to uniform and self-instructional course ware
Challenges
• Based on theory
• Self-learning may be complicated for technical areas of
media
• Lack of practical exposure
• Lack of mentor/ counsellor/ faculty
• Not adequate learner support service
• Lack of real time feedback from learners
• Inadequate information and communication system
• Ineffective counselling
Recommendations
• Use of OER in preparing the materials
• Use of scenario based learning pedagogy
• Use of blended approach
• Need to improve the learners support service
• Need to use digital technology extensively
• Use of conferencing to get immediate feedback
