have been a great influence on me. Myfirst article is about my second home; .

Scotland. I've been going ~here.my whole life, but each time Igo i:;always a new.. .

experience. The other topic Ichose to write about was volleyball. I started it in fifth

grade for an after school program,.and Iam now play volleyball outside of school in

a club. It was a fun experience putting together the magazine. I hope you epjoy;\.

Scotland ~'My Home Away From Home

" "

I've been going to Scotland

since Iwas very young~ The very first

time Iever traveled out of the country

to Scotland wa~ when Iwas one year

old. Iwas going to Scotland to visit

!;j

my dad's famHy, and I have been

traveling ever since. '

-;

Going to Scotland ha~ become

an annual visit that I look forward to"'

every year. I've been going there for

so long that it has become my second

",iii!

',home; My dad was born and raised in

Scotland and he came over to the

.

United States. Because only my dad

emigrated from Scotland, we go to

Scotland to visit my Dad's side of the

famHy. For this reason, Iam not only

an American citizen, but a British

citizen as weU.

When visiting Scotland my

dad, mum, sister, and i always stay

with our grandmother. My

grandmother lives in a little one-story

house, with a white exterior, with"

blue window frames and door, and a

bJack slanted roof, with ,a large garden '"

with a big hedge bordering it. The

house is located in a little virrage just. .

outside of Sterring. Visitingmy famHy \

is a-big part of why we go to Scothmd

every year. I love visiting my

grandma, aunties and undes, and aU

my cousins! They aUlive in different

places in Scotland, but my

grandmother's little house is where

, we usuaUyaUcome together to catch

up with each other.

"There are always

funny new stories"

Onething Ialways like about

Scotland is that there is always

",

something new. Whether it is walking

down Princes St. in Edinburgh and

seeing aUthe new fashions, or

meeting new people in Perth. There

are always funny new stories or at

least a new variation of a story that

"When you gave a g'ood

fantastic. We would get out of school at3:20

with everyone else, and head up to the gym.

Once'our coach came, we would get i'na , ,

huge circle and stretch. O~e ofthe eighth

graders on the team wou"ldcount out all the

odd numbers up to teli, and everyone else

would fill in with the even numbers. As a

sixth grader that was new to the team, 1

thought this was one of the coolest things in

the world. After all the stretching and

counting, wewouJcI get in a long line and one

by one, our coach would toss the ball to us

and we would pass it back. I loved this drill

because when you gave a good pass,

everyone could see it! We practked drills to

improve our passing, setting, and serving,

from 3:30 to 5:00. Bu~during that time, ,our

coach also always made time for us to play

and intense game of queen of the'

court or a scrimmage.

'~,'Mi~dle school volleyball, was a,,, '

fantastic start, I learned all the basics

'andru;lesofplaying volleyball. But it, , '-

... '

was enough to satisfy my need to

play. In eighth grade, Iwent to a try-

out for The Outsiders Volleyball Club.

It was a long ,and anxious wait for me,

till Ifound out whether I made the

team or not. When Ifound out that I

made the team" Iwas practically,~

bo~ncing ofthe walls. The Outsiders

vbc taught me so muchmore, than I

, couldhave ever imagined at the time.

I learned how'to control a pass, that

would have been impossible for me to

have had passed before, to an over

hand serve that I have been previously

working so hard to do. The practices

., where very late at night and tiring, by

the time you got in the car and was

half way home, you would already be

sound asleep. But we learned so

much, and my teammates and

coaches were so great, that leavi~g a~

6:30 to drive to the gym, only to leave

two long hours later, never seemed so

bad.

~.

"I got to spend my time

with my friends, playing

volleyball!"There were only seven other girls 0'1

the team. Because there were so few of U$iat

practices we all got the help and attention

we needed. At games we all got ~ nice

amount of time to play, and we all got to

'knoweachother very well. We spent many

good times together and became very good

friend with each other~ The friendship I made,

with the girls on my volleyball team Vl(o~ld

have never existed ifwe all didn't share the

love we have for the sport. Waking up,at 5:30

a.m. to drive to a volleyball tournament that

lasted from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. was the

best part of the whole season" because Igot

to spend my time with my friends, playing

volleyball!

Playing in a volleyball game is nothing, .

like playing at practiee. The gyms are huge,

and loud, with tons of other teams, who all

have the same hope of wining. The fi(st

game is usually the hardest; be,cause you are

still tired from waking up'at a ridiculously-

early time to sit in a car for two hours to get

there. You have thirty minutes to warm-up'

and practice before the game~ Then you line

up with the referee and walk tothe

middle of the court and wave to all,

the adoring fans a.k.a the volleyball

'"I moms and dads, and the occasional

sibling who got dragged along. The

, first few seconds of the game are the

most important,,!>ased off the first

serve, it decides whether you team is

going to start of behind and

eventually lose the game, have a

strong start and slowlyhave,your

downfall, lose the first few points and

come back inthe end to win the

game, or remain Strongthe whole,

game, waiting for you to collect your

prize.

Watching volleyball and

playing it are two very different

things. You can watch the ball come

to the passer, who passes it to the

setter, who sets it up for the hitter, to

hit it down onto the ground on the

other teams cqurt. Or you can stop

the speeding ball from hitting the

gro.,md, by digging it up high to the

setter, forthem to give a quickset to

the hitter, so they can slam the ball

down into the, other teams court. It

,the hitter who gets, the points, and

the setter who prepares the ball for the

point, but it is the back row passers job, to

keep the other team from getting any points

off of your team. I played back row for 'The

Outsiders team, and that position 'iswhere I

feel most comfor,table. It doesn't always, ,

seem like it from watching a volleyball game,.

but just as mllch relies on the back roW, as it'

does on the,setterand the,hitter. From

playing back row, I learned a great deal more

about responsibility"and how anything you

do affects the team, for better or for worse.

"Volleyball has been by

,far my favorite."

Istarted to p,layvolleyball to keep'me, '.

occupied after school., And I have tried, ,

, almost every sport and activity possible, but

""'"

volleyball has been by far my favorite. Iha,ve

made many friends through it, and have had

, tons of fun. Sometimes, when I am playing

volleyball, I don'teven realize that I am

getting exercise and learning important

lessons! It isalmost impossiblefor me to be '

sad while playing volleyball, which is yet

~nother reason why I love it so much. '

I have been playing,sincefifth grade,

and Ihope to continue playing for a very long

time.
