Alexander McQueen A/W 2005 “The Man Who Knew Too Much”

This collection was bursting with Hitchcock references, with a Vertigo invite, Rear Window set, Tippi Hedren inspired clothes, and of course with the show’s title itself. McQueen cut to a 1940s silhouette

• The first portion of the show was a commemoration to this sense of style. Women in bouffant hairstyles and glamorous makeup wore sharply tailored skirt suits, camel colored coats, and leather jackets. There was an entire section of looks with leopard print accents, and everything was nipped in at the waist.

• The second portion of the runway show was experimenting with Navajo prints and denim– it was extremely wearable, albeit perhaps for the sake of selling clothes, rather than true artistic expression. For many seasons now, McQueen had been criticized on both ends of the spectrum; it was “too theatrical” or “too restrained”, and perhaps this is why he gave them everything in this collection.

• The last section of the runway show was an adage to old Hollywood glamour. Mermaid gowns in gorgeous jeweled detailing, sumptuous tulle skirts, and sculpted silhouettes in satin and silk were truly the standouts of the season.
