Acknowledgment
We are pleased to have this opportunity to thank our family, friends and faculty members who supported us during this endeavour. We are most grateful to Sir Rafley, our English teacher, for his wisdom, guidance, and encouragement throughout this entire research process. I am extremely thankful to the Labuan Matriculation Students for their cooperation because without them, this research would have not been done. Even though they were busy, they still let us borrow their time to help us obtaining the data needed. We appreciate the time, feedback and support they have given towards us. Besides that, without our family support, we cannot complete this research as they have been supporting our finance from buying and getting things for this research. Thank you.
Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
When a student graduates from senior high school and is about to attend a college, he must face a problem on how to use his leisure time in a productive way. Based on Cambridge Advance Learner’s Dictionary (3rd Edition), 2008, leisure time is defined as the time when you are not working or doing other duties. Macmillan English Dictionary (2nd Edition), 2007 also states that Leisure time is free times that can be used to do what we like or hobbies. In college, there are more spare time and more temptation than those in senior high school. One must think it carefully about your leisure time, otherwise, you will find you have lost too much valuable time to enrich your experience and improve your knowledge.
From ancient times to modern society, study is considered to be the most important task of a student. In college, there are more spare time and more temptation than those in senior high school. Yue Xing, Hillary (2010) said that according to recent survey, American college students use 14-24 hours a week to study in their leisure time and the figure of Chinese college students is more than that.
Therefore, we would like to know on how Labuan Matriculation students spend their leisure time.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Students in Labuan Matriculation College have classes from Monday to Friday and usually the class will ended from 2.p.m until 4.p.m in the evening. Sometimes, lecturers will make extra classes on Saturday or even after class to finish up the syllabus. Based on our observation in the college, most of the students spend their leisure time after class that is between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. These students were seen doing different types of activity. Some of them went outdoors and the others stay indoors.
In this research, we want to find out LMC’s students activities during their spare time since, most of their time were spent for going to class and studying.
1.3 Objectives
The objectives of this research are to:
1. To investigate LMC’s students activities in their spare time.
2. To find out the impact of these activities among LMC’s students.
3. To determine the time spent by LMC’s students.
Chapter 2
Research Methodology
2.1 Research Sample
For this research writing with the topic of Leisure Time, we have narrowed our scope and conducted our studies on Labuan Matriculation College (LMC) students from different courses ranging from pure science to accountancy. About 50 students aged between 18-19 years old were selected randomly and 25 for each gender that is male and female. These students mostly came from Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak which have different kinds of ethnicity such as Bajau, Murut, Iban, Bugis, Kedayan and others.
2.2 Research Instrument
We used a few methods in order to achieve our research objectives such as questionnaires, interviews and observations.
A questionnaire is used to collect data. It consists of two parts. Section A is used to collect respondent’s background information. Section B is used to collect information acquired in accordance to the objective of this research writing, whereby question 1-2 were taken from objective 1 that is to investigate LMC’s students activities in their free time. Question 3-5 were taken from objective 2, to find out the impact of these activity among LMC’s students and objective 3 which is to determine the time spent by LMC’s students influenced question 5-9.
A few interviews were also conducted to ask the LMC students about their leisure time more detailed. We gathered 5 students from different courses in a room after class. Mostly of them have different respond towards our question about their activities during spare times.
Besides, we also made observations on LMC’s students in their free time. We have been observing all of these students for a week. During this time, we noticed that most of the students preferred to do indoor activities rather than going out to do outdoor activities. In dorm, they tend to relax by doing something that is not burdening such as playing games. While the others like to sweat themselves out by doing sports.
To calculate all of the data we have obtained, we used statistical software to make chart and percentage of the data to make comparison.
2.3 Research Procedure
We took 3 months to complete the study. Firstly, questionnaires were distributed and collected from 2-10 January 2014. Then data was analysed from 14-18 January 2014. After that, conclusion and recommendations were made from 10-14 February 2014. On 18-20 February 2014, title page, acknowledgment, table of contents, and references were completed. This report was submitted on 7th March 2014.

Chapter 4 : Conclusion
4.1 Summary of Findings
After conducting the research, the researchers discovered the answers to the questions and achieved the objectives as outlined in the study.
The first objective of the study is to investigate LMC students’ activity in their free time. The researchers found that the students have different activities in their leisure time. Most of the students prefer doing indoor activities rather than outdoor activities. Sport becomes the popular activity among LMC students from both genders. In addition, majority of the students agree that spending leisure time with studying is good and only a few of them disagree.
The second objective of the study is to find out the impact of the activities done by LMC students. Majority of the students think that the importance of leisure time is for them to fulfil their hobbies to release their stress. Next, having fun become the second importance of leisure time as they can spend their time doing activities they like rather than stressing themselves out from studying all the time. And the last importance is for health and mainly from doing sports since they sweat themselves out and thus increasing their metabolism. Next, most of the students choose fun as the benefits from spending their time doing activities and none of them think it is wasting time.
The third objective of the study is to determine the time spent by LMC students. The researcher found that most of the students spend their leisure time in weekend as they have no classes in Saturday and Sunday. They spend their leisure time for 1-2 hours in a day. The respondents gave different opinion about spending leisure time by going outing in the weekend but majority of them agree that it is good since they can feel the different environment outside of the college.
4.2 Research Limitations
In doing the research, the researchers encountered some limitations. First, since this only a survey study using a questionnaire to collect data, it might hinder some important information from the respondents since it is very limited. Secondly, because of time constraints, the numbers of respondents were limited to 50 only. Thirdly, the researchers had problem of getting more information on the topic since the resource were very limited. However, the researchers were able to finish the report and submit it.
4.3 Recommendation for Future Research
After completing the research, the researchers would like to recommend future suggestions to investigate the topic in details. Firstly, the research can be conducted between genders to get more accurate information. Secondly, the impact of doing the activities can be studied so that more facts can be obtained. Lastly, the future researcher can increase the total respondents in their research because the results of the findings can be generalized to all the students’ population of Labuan Matriculation College.
