What makes MXpressions Common Core• Content – the only standards in MX are the CCSS• Mathematical Practices – embedded within every lesson;

most activities • Learning Progressions – the MX Learning Path and

conceptual supports laid the foundation for these documents

• Problem Types – identical to those in the CCSS; taught and applied throughout the program

• Fluency Plan – supports the CCSS designated as fluency standards at each grade level

Ways to Foster Math Talk in your classroom• Explicit modeling

• Giving very specific feedback as to what students did well so that they could duplicate.

• Having students model for others

• Sentence frames

• Creating a pattern for discussion much like one might do for MX.

• Build a safe environment for sharing

• Celebrate when someone points out a mistake so that they can help others.

• Call mistakes something else like a pitfall or a hidden trap.

• Start by sharing out with partners then slowly move to small groups, then to whole group.

Math TalkTODAY IN MATH CLASSWHEN I’M AT THE FRONT BOARD I WILL… *SPEAK SO EVERYONE CAN HEAR ME * STAND BESIDE MY DRAWING SO EVERYONE CAN SEE * POINT TO MY DRAWING AS I EXPLAIN IT

DURING DISCUSSIONS I WILL… * ASK A QUESTION * ANSWER A QUESTION * RESTATE A PROBLEM * RESTATE A COMMENT

COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS…• Family letters provide thorough explanations of new concepts• Thinkcentral• Encourage help to establish fluency with basic facts!• Portfolios

– In addition to the usual, include proof drawings (do some on paper, not just math boards)– Test pages, Homework pages, Activity pages, Writing Prompts

• Assessments… Tests plus the following:– Observations Notes– Proof Drawings
