“The City” is just a little more than one mile squared, this area is mainly for the financial services. In the medieval period, the City was the full extent of London.

The term London now includes Greater London with 32 London boroughs as well as the City of London.

LOCATION: South East England

RIVER: Thames

BORDER TOWNS: Oxford, Guildford, Brighton

POPULATION: 7.5 million inhabitants

ETHNIC GROUPS: 69% are white, 6% are Indians, 2.4% are pakistanis, 2,3% are Bangladeshis,2% are other asian. 5.5% are Black African, 4.3% are Black Caribbean, 0.8% are other Black. 3.5% of Londoners are of mixed race, 1.5% are chinese and 2% Belong to another ethnic group.

CLIMATE: London has a temperate marine climate, summers are warm (May to September) and winters are chilly but rarely reaching below freezing point. It is quite a dry city, with less rain than New York, Paris and Sydney. Snow is quite rare as the heat from the urban area can make London up to 5c warmer than the surrounding areas in winter.

GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS: London has lots of parks and gardens, such as Hyde Park, St.James’s Park, Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill. It has the river Thames running though it and tributaries leading off the Thames, such as Little Venice where you find river barges. It is quite a flat city and so many people cycle to work.

ECONOMY: London’s largest industry is finance. It has over 480 overseas banks (more than any other city in the world).The currency is the pound sterling. It has not adopted the euro, even though it is a member of the European Union. Canary wharf is major business and financial centre, to the east of London, in an area Known as the Docklands.

More than half of the UK’s top 100 listed companies are headquartered in Central London as are over 100 of Europe´s 500 largest companies. The city of London insurance market.Media companies are concentrated in London, such as the BBC.Many national newspapers are edited in London. There are a large number of law and accountancy firms. Tourism is one of London´s prime industries. Over15 million tourists visit London every year and annual expenditure is around £15 billion. London is the world´s most visited city.the port of London is the second largest in the Uk, handling 53 million tonnes of cargo each year.

Head of State: Queen Elizabeth II, married to Prince Philip.A very popular Queen. Most British are proud of the Monarchy and many tourists come to London to see Buckingham Palace, one of the Queen´s residences.

Gastronomy: Food in London is very varied as there are so many different races living there. Indian food and Chinese food are very popular and generally of excellent quality and fairly cheap.There is no such thing as typical London food, as there is a large port in London people often go there to buy kippers and mackerel. Restaurants are everywhere, prices varying enormously.

Traditions and Customs:Religious festivals- the majority of the population is Christian so Christmas is the biggest festival. There is a large Chinese population, living in China Town and they celebrate the Chinese New year with parades and floats. There are also many African Caribbeans and they have a carnaval at Notting Hill every year. It is open to everyone.

Sightseeing:Monuments – Places to visit:The Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, Madame Tussaud’s waxwork museum, the British Museum,the National Gallery,the Victoria & Albert museum, the London Eye, the National History museum,the Science museum, the Tate Modern,Buckingham palace and the Changing of the Guard.

Markets: Camden town.For antiques: Islington.

Shops: Oxford Street for high street shops.For trendy clothes: Camden town.For designer clothes: Bond street, King´s road.For entertainment: Leicester Square and Covent Garden- for theatres,ballets, opera and musicals such as Cats, phantom of the opera,the sound of music, etc.

Sports in LondonFootball- Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are the best known teams.Rugby- rugby union teams, the Harlequins Rugby League and the London Skolars.Cricket- served by two Test cricket grounds, the Lord´s and the Oval.Tennis- at Wimbledon.Running- the London marathon.Rowing- the oxford and cambridge boat race on the river thames between putney and mortlke.
