One  concern  that  may  apply  to  all  these  test  types  is:      §  What  to  do  if/when  a  candidate  fails  a  test.      It  can  be  tricky  to  determine:      §  What  length  of  /me  should  be  mandated  before  they

can  retake  the  test  §  How  many  /mes  they  are  able  to  write  the  retake.

How many retakes?

Allowing  for  unlimited  mul/ple  retakes  with  this  type  of  test  means  that:

Someone  may  eventually  qualify  as  having  mastery  through  sheer  repe55on  and  eventually  finding  the  right  answer,  and  not  because  they  actually  have  the  proper  skills.

It  is  good  prac/ce  when  making  tests  to  have:      §  A  wai/ng  /me  for  retakes  which  is  not  immediate

This  encourages:    Reflec5on  of  the  ques5ons  on  the  test  with  the  intent  that  test  takers  will  perform  be@er  at  the  next  opportunity.

The  number  of  aTempts  allocated  when  you  create  a  test  is  also  important  in  order  to  avoid  inaccurate  results.      For  most  tests,  the  limit  of  retakes  is  three,  aJer  which  a  longer  remedial  period  should  be  applied  to  allow  for  reflec/on  and  re-‐learning.

Test security When  you  or  your  company  make  an  online  exam,  you  must  take  into  account  that:

Some  test  takers  may  be  abusing  the  system  and  retaking  the  test  mul5ple  5mes  in  order  to  harvest  the  correct  answers.

Test security  To  avoid  this  and  to  ensure  the  integrity  of  your  test  results,  you  should  not  allow:      §  Retakes  on  a  test  where  a  candidate  has  passed    If  you  allow  retakes:    §  Change  the  exam  by  using  different  sta/s/cally  equivalent  forms

and/or  randomiza/on.
