A machine tool is a machine for shaping or machining metal or other rigid materials, usually by cutting, boring, grinding, shearing, or other forms of deformation.

 Machine tools employ some sort of tool that does the cutting or shaping. 

Cutting tools must be made of a material harder than the material which is to be cut.

The tool must be able to withstand the heat generated in the metal-cutting process.

The tool must have a specific geometry.

An ideal cutting tool material must possess the following characteristics:

High Temperature stability. Resistance against wear and tear. Impact resistant. Chemically inert to work material and cutting

fluid.

product.
