The Inner Wheel, which has always involved its members in concrete action in the world, is thinking today of promoting meeting and study moments about the reality of our time to hold on to the affirmation of an informed female figure, active, available for dialogue and help to whoever is in difficulty, to collaborate in the path towards a new European citizenship of women. A path which implies concrete answers to the challenges of Europe in the XXI century, dictated by both the economic and monetary Union, and by the widening of the Union, from the role of Europe in the world, from the development of new technologies and of the information society.

In his welcome address, the Rector Prof. Francesco Profumo (now Secretary of State for Education and Science) , whose seat in the Colloquium was hosted, as well as words of praise for the interesting topics, which are subject of debate even within the University, stressed the important place of the Polytechnic at National and International level. And interesting the mention on the role of women in the University life, which has now reached a rate of 27%, with a substantial increase, also due to "WOMAN ENGINEER", a Project implemented in mid 2000 with the Piedmont Region.

At the center, the new model of the 3 modules, more interactive, after that applied in the previous three steps, based on the call for papers (though innovative in the Inner Wheel), to allow the Inner Wheel members, interested, to study, write, compare. The need for women Inner Wheel, to be inside the story, as protagonists, as actresses and not only spectators. The dream of Catherine Refabert to extend this project to other geographical areas. Or the dream of Luisa enter as Inner Wheel in a European project.

European Women of the Inner Wheel have the duty to be documented, present and active.The International Project "WOMEN FOR EUROPE - THE ROLE OF INNER WHEEL" necessarily had to fit into this strategy, to move from knowledge to action.

Europe 2020 is the EU's growth strategy for the coming decade. In a changing world, EU should become a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy. Concretely, the Union has set five ambitious objectives:

1) employment, 2) innovation, 3) education, 4) social inclusion, 5) climate/energy , to be reached by 2020.

But besides or THANKS to our FRIENDSHIP, which is an incredible powerful force, WE ARE PERMANENTLY FOCUSING AND INCREASING on HUMANITARIAN SERVICE.International Inner Wheel IS THE VOICE OF I00.000 WOMEN WHO CARE AND SHARE WORLDWIDE THROUGH SERVICE AND INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING,LET US MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR.Because we care and share, we are interested in all the women’s changes which occures everywhere around us.The situation of the women are changing fast in our world .WE are in a fast track world today, we don’t want to be followers…. …We are speaking of reinventing the model of the women status in the new millennium; it is definitely an asset for a better IW corporate image.

Promoting IW, not just through service, but through intellectual endeavour must become a normal process, and my hope is to be able to have this process becoming a worldwide one: “the IIW Women for the World, the IIW Women for a better world”.

THE THREE MODULES

Every Module, led by a President of one of the four Clubs which form part of the Literary Prize, was able to enjoy the contribution of Illustrious Orators. Experts and personalities from the Academic world, from the European Union, from Unesco, that focused work primarily on themes coming from the 2020 Strategy of the European Union, at the centre of the International Meeting: knowledge and innovation, sustainable development, economics and social solidarity.

With the objective of identifying, and this emerged in every space-debate, paths of research and experience aimed at investigating and giving back visibility to the individual and the collective role of women in these sectors - through the network of Female Association and of the Inner Wheel in the specific - in the European construction. To be a stimulus for the recognition and the evaluation of a Europe of gender in a transcultural perspective. To promote the work of IW members as Citizens of Europe.

A resource-efficient Europe is one of seven flagship initiatives as part of the Europe 2020 strategy aiming to deliver smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. It aims to create a framework for policies to support the shift towards a resource-efficient and low-carbon economy which will help us to:

• boost economic performance while reducing resource use;

• identify and create new opportunities for economic growth and greater innovation and boost the EU's competitiveness;

• ensure security of supply of essential resources;

• fight against climate change and limit the environmental impacts of resource use.

PATRIZIA LOMBARDI, Professor at Architecture & Planning Department, Polytechnic of Turin: “Evaluating and Managing Sustainable Development in Cities and Communities”

Over these decades, governments, communities and businesses have all responded to the challenge of sustainability to some extent. Despite all these efforts, recent statistics and studies on the state of global ecosystem show that nearly two-thirds of the essential services provided by nature to humankind are in decline worldwide, and in many cases we are literally living on borrowed time. Also the poverty is increased at global level and the gender issue is still a problem worldwide. Clearly the warnings, the policy, the education, the sustainable city guidelines and the green building assessments are not making enough of an impact to bring about meaningful change in the 21st century’s development trajectory and its environmental impact. Improving the basis for sound decision-making is, therefore, a high priority.

MARINA NUCIARI, Professor at the School of Economics, University of Turin:“Human Resources for Innovation in the Knowledge Society: more women in the Knowledge Economy?”

Female employment, knowledge economy and economic growth are intertwined.....Lisbon’s strategy, moreover, pointed for EU countries to become “the world’s most competitive and dynamic knowledge economy by 2010”, but only few countries have so far reached this goal. This means that despite the global economy’s dependence on knowledge industries and knowledge workers grows, gender gap as far as women economic integration is concerned still remains, and human capital and talent are not adequately rewarded, human resources are not efficiently used, and “creating diversity” cannot manifest its potential.

ANNA MARIA POGGI, Dean of the School of Educational Sciences and Vice Rector, University of Turin:“Responsibility and solidarity to overcome the crisis. The contribution of women as an opportunity not to lose”

Anna Maria Poggi focuses her report on the discussion and demonstration of two paradoxes. First paradox: Everyone, starting by the American Freedman, argue that, a greater participation of women in the world of work helps to get out of the crisis. But, the crisis hit, first, Women. Second paradox: It is important to do gender policies, but we must change the cultural perspective. But, if there is not the cultural perspective, the policies are not implemented. And if there are not policies, the cultural perspective does not change. In its view, partly anticipating the conclusion, she is convinced that it was a mistake even by women imagine that the cultural perspective could change policies.
