Ways Authors Adapt Fairy Tales
-Changing the character:-from a girl to a boy-from a fancy godmother to a less fancy one -from wicked stepsisters to hairy brothers
-Changing the events:-from something old-fashioned to something modern-from something rich and fancy to something more people can relate to
-Changing the motivations:-from wanting more money and power to wanting to do good in the world
Is this a good message?
-Cinderella is mistreated by her stepmother and her stepsisters; she has to do all the work.
-An invitation comes to a ball at the palace; they tell Cinderella she has to get them ready for the ball and then to stay home.
-A fairy godmother gives Cinderella a fancy dress and a fancy pumpkin carriage so she looks like a princess. The magic will go awayat midnight.
-Cinderella goes to the ball and dances with the prince.
-At the stroke of midnight, she runs out, leaving a glass slipper.
-The prince searches for the owner, finds Cinderella. They get married and live happily ever after.

Time to plan your third scene!Be critical of yourself today:
• Am I show what is happening to AND in my characters?> Am I using dialogue
(internal and external)?
• Am I writing my story in ways that allow my reader to picture what is happening?> Am I describing the
scenery?
• Am I bringing my story to life?> Am I using powerful
vocabulary, and action-packed verbs?

The Beast WANTS to find true love and peace, but his PROBLEM is he does not treat people kindly, and gets punished by being placed under a spell.
Pinnochio WANTS to be a real boy, but his PROBLEM is when he gets the chance to become more than a puppet, he lies all the time, and his nose shows it.
The Wolf WANTS to eat just like any other animal, but his PROBLEM is that he underestimates the pigs.

Run, run, as fast as you can...
Then he huffed...
Little pig, little pig, won't you...
Mirror, mirror, on the wall...
Grandma, what big ears you have...
Refrains We Know By Heart
I'm so mad at my brother. He comes to me with these lists of things. I'm supposed to do this, this, this. I just put it out of sight and ignore it. But he comes back at me with his list of demands. I feel like taking his list-- actually, taking him, and crumpling him, squashing him, and throwing him right out of my life.
DON'T GET STUCK IN THE DIALOGUE SWAMP!
"I'm so mad at my brother. He comes to me with these lists of things."
"I'm supposed to do this, this, this."
"I just put it out of sight and ignore it."
"But he comes back at me with his list of demands."
"I feel like taking his list-- actually, taking him-- and crumpling him, squashing him, and throwing him right out of my life."
Write the action! Save your reader from the blank TV screen!
Language Paints a Beautiful Picture
• Use describing words (adjectives)
• Reach for exact, precise words
• Use opposites to show differences
• Use repetition of sounds, words, and lines
• Make a comparison, like "He walked like a penguin."
Fairy Tale Similes

At once she arose and !ed, nimble as a deer.
The glass slipper went on at once, as easily as if it had been made of warm wax.
