■ Launched with two pathways: Business Technology, Software Engineering

■ 59 apprentices, 11 companies

■ 40% female

■ 20% mature (>25)

■ 55% have >1 year relevant work full time work experience

The Future

■ 2016: 2 new pathways based on employer demand

– Data Analytics

– Cyber Security

■ 2016: Expect numbers to grow to >100, with 20 companies

■ 2017 Level 7 apprenticeship and Digital Marketing degree

Relating assessment to the workplace ■ Open, work focused assessments

■ Some technical skills-based assessments can’t be work focused

■ Option for employer to request tailored assessment with flexible deadline – must still meet Learning Outcomes and be approved by tutor.

■ Projects – two in final two years

■ Portfolio

Dealing with diverse experience/knowledge within the cohort ■ Its more diverse than the your usual cohort of

students

■ APEL apprentices – not done this but need to start

■ Test apprentices at start of year and for students with significant relevant experience

– Provide self-managed routes through content

– Optionally allow completion with non attendance

■ Expect experienced students to help/teach others – put them in Sets.

Managing the mentoring process

■ Training – provide information & clarify expectations

■ Be available for visits by university tutors

■ No assessment by mentors

■ Reporting on responsibility/help/support/guidance in work-based assessment

■ Portfolio – read and comment, periodically

Recruitment

■ Employer Responsibility

■ Easy for some companies – corporates and high visibility SMEs, e.g. Autotrader

■ Hard for many others – we use MMU open days, school visits, special open evenings for Parents/Students/Teachers/Companies

■ Website to allow interested parties to register interest and to promote opportunities

■ Facebook

■ Support SMEs with assessment days

Work-based learning and issues of confidentiality ■ Apprentices and Organisations think it is a big deal

■ Universities have disclosure policies in place

■ We added:

1. New Coversheet to request non-disclosure

2. Optional NDA to formalise non-disclosure

3. Optional Work falling under Official Secrets Act will not leave company premises – we assess on site.

Extending the experience

■ Apprentices are time-crunched

■ Extensive further reading not appropriate – IMHO

■ Work experience fulfills equivalent role to further reading by demonstrating knowledge and understanding beyond taught content.

■ Still require them to develop critical approaches to their discipline.

What is Hard

■ Skills Funding Agency

■ Round hole in square peg, e.g. recruitment, timetabling, quality

■ External liaison – rewarding but additional

■ Employers and Apprentices are more demanding than traditional students (and more rewarding).

■ Hence you will need extra support and Buy-In high up the organisation – Dean and above.
