Does it contain standard poster features? The main image on the poster is of the two main characters, as they are embracing it connotes the romance genre. The title of the film features on the poster, it’s based on a book so fans of the book are likely to watch the film.

The tagline “It’s never too late to fall for a mate.” uses humour to attract an audience.

The credit block on the poster shows that it’s a main film poster, not a teaser.

Although the producer or director aren’t clearly featured on the poster, the author of the book that the film is based on is on it. The book “Where Rainbow’s End” was a bestseller so a large audience is also likely to be attracted by this. This author also wrote “P.S. I Love You”, another bestselling romance novel. Having the author on the poster will draw in a bigger audience than having the producer or director.

The star names are shown boldly on the poster, showing that they may act as USP’s for the film. Sam Claflin has featured in the blockbuster film “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and Lily Collins has featured in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”, both of the actors have been in popular films so they are likely to attract people who are fans of their work.

There isn’t a specific release date on the poster, however the poster does give the twitter and facebook addresses so that people can follow updates on the film.

What are the main figures/ objects / background?

The poster is stylised using a heart – this is a typical feature of romance films as the heart connotes love.

The two characters are also smiling at each other, it shows that they are happy to be together and suggests that they are the couple of this film.

The characters are dressed in modern clothes, the normality of what they are wearing suggests that the film takes place in an urban environment – which is a typical setting for romance films.

What symbols are used? Does the audience need foreknowledge to decode them?

As this film isn’t in a series the audience wouldn’t need any knowledge about the film beforehand.

The tagline “It’s never too late to fall for a mate.” could be the only thing that the audience needs to decode. In the trailer it’s established that Rosie and Alex (featured on the poster) are best friends, the “mate” in the poster is Alex so the audience may need to see the trailer to understand the tagline.

Are the messages primarily visual, verbal or both?

The messages on the poster are primarily verbal as there is only one main visual object on the poster, the two main characters.

The only visual image on the poster is the two main characters, Rosie and Alex, in an embrace. Although it’s relatively basic, this image is really all that is needed on the poster because their position completely connotes the romance genre.

One of the verbal messages in the poster is the tagline “It’s never too late to fall for a mate.” the tagline uses the word “fall” to show the romance genre as the two protagonists “fall” in love during the film.

Another of the verbal messages in the poster is the reviewer quote “Outrageously funny…Charming” which makes people more inclined to watch the film because the reviewer quote puts a positive view of the film.

The star names are also verbal messages which show that they are likely to be USP’s for the film.

Who is the intended audience?

As the film is a romance, the intended audience is probably female as it is more likely to appeal to women. Generally, romance films are aimed at women.

The film is also likely to be aimed at a younger audience because of the age of the characters. The film begins with the characters at age 16 and follows them into young adulthood, a younger audience is more likely to connect to the characters because they are similar ages.

As the film is based on the book “Where Rainbows End” the fanbase for that book is also likely to be an intended audience for the film. Also, the writer has also written books including “P.S. I love you.”, an audience who has seen the film or read the book are also likely to be attracted to Love, Rosie.

Critical Evaluation.• Is it a good poster? • Overall the poster is good because the poster conveys the genre clearly, the tagline makes it memorable and the quote on the poster makes it

more appealing as the review is positive. Although there aren’t many colours or images on the poster this makes the poster more appealing as there isn’t much revealed about the plotline, making the poster more ambiguous makes it more intriguing.

• Does it communicate effectively with the audience?• Yes, the poster clearly conveys the genre and leaves the plot unclear – attracting the intended audience, but still keeping them interested in the

film. • Are there any alternative readings which might harm the marketing message? • There aren’t any images likely to harm the marketing message as it’s clear that the film is a romance, nothing about the poster is going to

confuse an audience about the genre. • Is it offensive? • There don’t appear to be any offensive messages on the poster or from the objects used in the poster, so people aren’t likely to find it offensive.
