I am doing research using structured light scanning techniques to create accurate 3D images of hard candies. Structured light scanning requires a projector to project the specic light pattern that will be analyzed by software to create a 3D image. I will be using the projector to deliver a Biology guest lecture at a Community College on Thursday. Then on Friday I will be using it to practice for a research talk that I will be delivering on behalf of NC State department of Entomology at the North Carolina Pest Management Association conference. What are you going to use [device] for? I am conducting my graduate thesis research in Botswana this summer. I am in need of a digital voice recorder to record long focus groups. I will need a Sony ICD-PX312 to digitally record interviews for my dissertation research in March. 7. Service model: beta Issues Conversation about use Workshops/ training/ interest groups 8. Workshops 9. I have two current students who are interested in helping to explore using the glasses within the context of the public speaking assignments. We would like to evaluate the glasses for use as a speaking aid, similar to notecards or a teleprompter. We plan to have each of the students give two versions of a speech, one with glasses, and one without glasses, to determine whether the glasses will improve their performance based on our standard rubric. 10. I am a PhD student in Chemical Engineering Department. The google glass are planning to be used in the bubbling bed research. The shape of the bubble needs to be recorded during the experiment. Google glass can potentially provide multiangle image, which is complementary data of the existing high speed camera. 11. I'm studying the possibilities of combining creative coding with big data to explore the possibilities of digital media experiences and distribution. 12. Application Development: Specifically, building basic Facebook integration for Glass so as to quantify the implications of wearable devices on social media. 13. I will see if it can help me to teach badminton to my friend or not. 14. Megan Wood, dual degree student in Textile Technology and Art and Design I made the paper out of old communications media: cassette tapes, oppy disks, circuit boards, aVCR and other electronics. Then attached the book to a makey makey and used graphite (and myself) as a conductor which allows you to run/control any program on your computer. You will see me playing Tetris simply from using the keypad I drew on the paper. As you can see, the library has inspired me on so many levels 15. Idea born from time as Repository Coordinator Time spent with researchers uploading their work to the repository Researchers appreciated that someone from central campus valued their research. I saw a new role for the library to celebrate the work of researchers 18. This trial has been a success, now permanent part of staff work portfolios 2. Keep an open mind, you never know what request will come next 3. Need a website & marketing to communicate purpose, inventory and staff 4. The equipment pool has brought new value to campus, library has new value on campus 5. Enabling success in new ways 34. Technical Lessons Learned 1. Microtiles are not as portable as we had hoped (semi-permanent installations are best) 2. Physical security for many of the devices is important, such as keeping digital globe safe overnight at an information fair 3. It is important to communicate appropriate lead and dismantling time to folks booking the equipment 4. Not all of the gear is plug and play and users may require quick training, such as the document camera usually requires a 5 minute crash course for each new user 5. The equipment pool coordinators require regular training on the cutting edge equipment 6. Webcams are great, but if we could do it over again, it would be nice to have them permanently installed in the meeting rooms, as they are handy for things like Skype 7. Keep a positive relationship with vendors, there is a regular requirements for parts and updates. 35. The key to success is being ruggedly handsome Jed Baker Make sure at least one of your technical staff can fabricate anything imaginable with a just hot glue gun and 14 gauge fencing wire 36.
