The rural idyll

The rural idyll is an image people have of rural life in a developed country.

They imagine a close community, little crime, little traffic, small pubs and village

shops and all near the countryside.

But how accurate is this picture of the countryside?

It is estimated that rural areas will increase by 18% in the next twenty

years whilst the growth of urban areas will be half this.

But there are problems….

• High demand for houses means that they have become very expensive and beyond the reach of young people.

• Poverty in UK rural areas rose by 3% in 2007, compared to only 1% in UK urban areas.

Issues with living in rural areas• Many homes in rural areas are “second homes” meaning that

villages are deserted most of the time.• Property prices have risen by 10% over the past 3 years meaning

that many local people cant afford to buy a house in their own village.

• Bus services to the local town only run twice a day• Rural poverty has risen by 3% in the past 5 years• Rural banks have closed although some mobile banks have been

set up.• On average there is only one village shop that is now the post

office, DVD rental, café, bakery, and just about everything else!• Some rural areas can’t receive terrestrial TV.• Internet speed is very slow- high speed broadband is only

available in the cities• There is only one mobile phone network. • People are on average 3 miles from their nearest doctor• Many church buildings are now redundant due to the lack of

congregation and vicars.• Many local primary schools are closing down.
