RHYMING GAMES WITH WORDS!
Rhyming games are a great place to start while teaching younger kids about poetry
Pick a word, think of all the words that rhyme with that word.
Try first with one-syllable words, and then with words of two or more syllables
This helps them to enjoy it more

Try and relate these to Mississauga Write down all the words you can think
of that have the same meaning as that adjective

PERFORM POETRY
Performing poetry is taking a poem and "acting it out” with……………...
Rhythm, sense of movement Use visuals that are attached to the words and
sentences Performing the above leaves a strong emotional
impact This creates an in-depth relationship with the
language which actually takes the child beyond the language skills

READ YOUR POEM OUT LOUD, TO YOURSELF OR TO A FRIEND!
You have to hear, and like, your own words, in your own ears, before anyone else does.
Try and relate them together

THINGS TO REMEMBER: A poem doesn’t have to be long A poem doesn’t have to be serious A poem doesn’t have to be about
important things A poem doesn’t have to rhyme A poem doesn’t have to be shown to
anybody A poem doesn’t have to be funny A poem doesn’t have to have a
message

BUT…………………
A poem can be any of these things, and many more
The only thing a poem really has to do, is to please you, the writer, and make you glad that you wrote it
AND THEN…
Share your poem with us we
will share it with the world.

A POEM
A poem is a little pathThat leads you through the trees. It takes you to the cliffs and shores,To anywhere you please.
Follow it and trust your wayWith mind and heart as one,And when the journey’s over,You’ll find you’ve just begun.
