American Dream

Kill Devil Hills Library was one of 75 libraries awarded funds from Dollar General and the American Library Association for the American Dream literacy initiative to assist those learning English.



Literacy Initiative

Forty-three different titles of self-study English language learning materials were purchased including CDs, DVDs, Books with CDs, and software on an online computer.



American Dream Collection

Some items are English-Spanish, but most are for speakers of any language.

Items can be sent to any of the seven libraries in the borrowing region making it convenient for English language learners and tutors.



Literacy Initiative

In one year, American Dream items were borrowed over 382 times to help English language learners. The library also referred people to local literacy organizations that provide free tutor-led English language learning classes.

Local businesses, and government, faith-based and literacy organizations helped spread the word about the American Dream Literacy Initiative.
