Lets begin with the sociological model of health….Why is it important to have an understanding about the social and environment aspects of a person?

The socio-medical model of health believes that to improve health it is necessary to address the social and environmental causes of illness in groups within society.

• THE MAIN FACTORS: • DISABILITY; people with a disability are more likely to

be unemployed, with all the attendant health impacts.

• SOCIAL CLASS: those from a lower social class experience poorer health. The Black report (1988).

• AGE; as we get older we are more likely to experience a wide range of illnesses. This is made worse if you also come from the poorest section of society when income is greatly reduced.

• GENDER; men and women have widely different patterns of ill health.

• MEN UNDER 65 ARE 3.5 TIMES MORE LIKELY THAN WOMEN TO DIE OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE.

• SUICIDE IS TWICE AS COMMON IN MEN AS IN WOMEN (contradicts feminist approach to health)

• WOMEN EXPERIENCE MORE ACCIDENTS AT HOME AND MEN AT WORK (could link to feminist approach)

• ETHNICITY; black and minority ethnic groups have higher risk of mortality from a range of diseases such as diabetes, liver cancer, tuberculosis, stroke and heart disease.

BIOMEDICAL MODEL• Identifies ‘health’ as being the ‘absence of disease’ (a negative

definition)

• This model of health was developed in the early part of the 19th century.

• As people became more aware of how the body worked together to ensure good health, the bio-medical model became more well known.

The bio medical model of health assumes that disease is abnormal, that every illness has a specific cause, and it is experienced in the same way

in all societies.

According to the Bio-medical model of health; disease either comes from:

• Outside the body

• Invaded the body and caused physical changes within the body

• Originated as internal involuntary physical changes

• The biomedical model of health defines diseases objectively, in accordance with the presence of recognised symptoms, and believes that the healthy body can be restored through scientifically based medical treatment. The human body is likened to a machine that can be returned to working order with the proper repairs.

• Doctors and other qualified experts diagnose and sanction treatment.

• Main purpose of health service is curative – to get people back to work.

• Disease and illness is explained by biological science.

• It is based in the understanding of how diseases arise, emphasising risk factors.

Biomedical model of health and functionalism • Inness is regarded as being dysfunctional for society.

• If people are ill they cannot make their normal contribution to the smooth running society.

• This approach focuses upon the individual and curing the disease/ ill health so that the person can function in society again.
