Effective communication

•EXERCISE – ROBOT WRITER

The Communication Model (Nelson-Jones, 1993)

•Sender -> encodes -> message -> decodes -> receiver

•But, let’s just think about this process…and consider it in relation to possible different ‘lenses’ (eg gender, race, culture, ability, religion, sexual orientation etc)

Communicating between people

• Body messages/movements (face and other parts)

• Touch messages (involves physical contact)

• Voice messages (re how you talk ie loudly or softly)

• Verbal messages (re what you say and how you express feelings)

• Action messages (what you do rather than what or how you say it)

Language is only part of the process, because other things can matter too eg Proximity

Things to bear in mind about language• People are hardwired to be sceptical about

what they are told.

• Almost every word has a dual impact: it carries meaning and feeling: it is both rational and emotional.

Words can have different meanings for different people at different times.

Consider the impact of the following words

White Feminine Dark Good Bad

Foreign Family Special Rich Mean

Perception

• People’s perceptions differ ----- “no brainer”
