What did he do?

He introduced the Indo-Arabig numeration system in Europe that we use actually with a posicional notation from 1 to 9 and a number with a nule valor: 0. He invented the Fibonacci succession, that consisted to start by the 0 and 1 and obtain the next term plusing the two previous numbers.

How did he know mathematics?

His father was the consul of Pisa in Africa, so Leonardo travelled to Africa for to help his father and was there where he know the Indo-Arabig system.

He went to Mediterranean countries to work with the most highlight mathematics in that time.
