In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

products?

Magazine

One of the conventions of film magazines is that they have a masthead across the top I used this convention in my magazine by creating my own unique masthead on Photoshop. I also followed the conventions of how text is placed and presented on Film Magazine front covers. I recognised that variations in the font size is important and made sure my magazine did this. I also reversed out some of the text using a contrasting colour.

I came up with an idea for a sales technique, to make 3 covers and advertise it as three covers to collect which theoretically should provoke more sales. This is challenging usual conventional ways to provoke more sales

Poster

I followed the conventions of the order of text and where things are placed, slogan at the top film name at the bottom along with the date of release. I have noticed from studying film posters that the date of release is more vague eg. Summer 2009 or march 2010. I decided to do this also by just stating december 2009.

I followed the convention of having a slogan featuring on my poster, ‘don’t get disconnected.’ this slogan is reflective of what the picture is which should make the poster itself more memorable.

The majority of posters I have seen and analysed have had people from the film on it however I have challenged this as I had an object, a disconnected phone, this is used as iconography aiming to symbolise the theme Left Behind.

Teaser Trailer

My Teaser Trailer follows the conventional style of editing for an action thriller, fast

paced short clips that reflect the timing of the music. My teaser trailer also has an

introduction in the form of a radio report, this is done to set the scene and give the

audience a hint at the plot. Conventionally teaser trailers should only hint at the plot to

keep the audience wanting more.

I used captions in my product to present a slogan ‘This Christmas just got colder’ this

also gives a vague date of release.

How effective is combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I think the combination of main product and my ancillary texts is extremely

effective in many ways it brings the products to life and makes it all seem real. I

have gained an insight in how to create different media products and also how

to advertise on different platforms.

Audience Feedback

Rafael Gough – I first saw the poster which captured me and made me intrigued to see the Teaser Trailer. I thought the editing and enhancing of the original image of the phone was outstanding. I also like the fast paced editing in the Teaser Trailer.

Leanne Houghton – The Poster and the Magazine front cover looked very realistic and professional. The teaser trailer was also realistic and managed to follow the conventions very well however I did find that the distorting of the clips was a bit overpowering at times.

Ellis Williams – I love the way that all products linked I thought that the themes in the teaser trailer where also presented very well in the poster. It also seems as though Owen took great care when creating the magazine as it needed to link to the film but also have its own brand as well, Owen got it spot on.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

My questionnaire for my teaser trailer helped hugely during the production

process. I learnt what my target audience wanted to see in a teaser trailer I also

learnt what sort of length my target audience expected it to be. I learnt that it is

mostly a teaser tailer that influences people to see the film which meant that

out of all my products the teaser trailer was most important.

Looking at the audience feedback after my products were made I have learnt

the importance of how the products are linked together. I also apprieciate that

the distorting of some of the clips may be too much and this maybe something I

would change.

How did you use new media technologies in the constructions and research, planning and

evaluation stages?During the construction of my poster I used a HD camera to take pictures in a

fully equipped photography studio I learnt how the lights worked and how to get

the lighting on the picture just right. To edit the picture for my poster I used

Adobe Photoshop I learnt what all the tools did and how to use them

appropriately.

To create my Film Magazine front cover I again used Adobe

Photoshop I learnt how to layer each image properly to get the right effect.

For the creation of my teaser trailer I used Adobe Premier for the first time and

at first found it complicated but I am now able to say that I could confidently

create a short movie on that programme. I learnt what all the special effects

and transitions were and how to use them.
