Our learnersAs instructors, we are responsible to
ensure our learners are happy
Who are they? Before we start to design a course, we need to ask ourselves these questions:
Who are our learners, their demographics? Where do they live and work? What is their
field of employment? What are their goals for this course? What are their fears or frustrations? What is their learning style? What type of technology will they be using?
At a distance When our learners
engage with our online content they are alone learning at a distance.
We aren't there when they work through the content so we need to add measures to make it successful for them.
Distance learners have certain needs, such as needing their e-course to be personalized and access support at anytime.
Goal settingCreating course goals is like using a
funnel to bring all the fragmented ideas and content into succinct learning points.
Reason #1 for goalsDon't confuse our learners
There is a best practice known in the teaching world:
Tell them what you are going to teach them Teach them it Review what you have taught them
Reason #1 for goals Unless we are teaching experts who
have the acquired knowledge of a particular field and can assimilate new concepts and facts through their complex thinking patterns, we need to spell out what we are teaching...
and teach it.
Reason #2 for goals If we are teaching some topic or skill,
we probably know it well. The people taking the course are
novices; thus, the reason they are learning from us.
By focusing on what needs to be taught (versus what we want to share) keeps our course on a focused path, and our brains in a teaching mode.
The lessonsEach goal and its subgoal become the title and focus for each lesson
The content Compose content for each goal and
subgoal and no more. Remember, we must teach essentials and
not get lost in our expert-level thoughts with possible consequences of talking over our learners' heads, over teaching.
Content can be presented in any form: Text, images, video, audio lectures, live webinars, slides, etc.
Engage themThe point of a learning activity is allow learners to stop, reflect on the lesson,
and test their understanding.
Example
Applying learning activities online so that people can engage on their own is a bit tricky but it can be done.
See the different activities I applied to my e-course, albeit this was a very interactive course. Video example of learning activities
Using multimedia Ensure you provide quality multimedia The least tolerated is poor audio Capture the image or sound with quality
equipment because you can only edit to a point in order to increase its quality afterwards.
Invest in good equipment and editors of your fav multimedia
However …Know that you don't have to handle all the technical aspects of your e-course. Find help.
