LDNC – Zagadahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWUT7BIYAts
•Produced by Dr Smith.•Genre: Afrobeat.•Video Directed by PressPlay.•Released on May 14th 2014.•Length of video is 5:53.•Channel of video is LDNClive.
SYNOPSIS
• The music video is about a guy in the studio and downloads a song to his phone (LDNC – Zagada) and plays the song put loud with a speaker bag.
• The video continues of him roaming round the streets with him playing the song out loud and the people who hear the song starts to dance to the song. A girl from college, a guy coming out of work, a little girl in the café, 3 girls from secondary school and 2 guys near an alley way.
• The video ends with the members of LDNC dancing to the song with everyone who featured in the video doing the zagada (a dance routine).
Narrative/Performance Based
The music video has a simple narrative, which is a guy enjoying the track by playing it out loud with a speaker around the streets. This is a way of promoting the track through the music video. The video is also performance based. Throughout the video there are people dancing “The Zagada”. This is also a way for people/audience to
know how to do the The Zagada (dance routine plus freestyle) The narrative and performance based are linked.
The conceptual element could be the different locations and different people dancing differently to the track.
Representation of Star• The stars of the video don’t come into the video till the end of
the song. This implies that the stars don’t have to represent their selves throughout the whole video as the dance routine (Zagada) represents them.
• However when they do come into the video they are dancing with all the people that appeared before, in a different location.
Target Audience
The target audience for the track are people (male and female) who enjoy Afrobeat. Typically young people
because the people in the video are young. They are encouraged to buy the track because throughout
the video there are many examples of ways to dance to Zagada, which the audience would learn so they also will
know how to do the Zagada.
Camera Angles
Close ups are used throughout the video to emphasise an object e.g. hands, iPhone &
speaker
Birds eye view is used to establish the equipment in the studio.
Long shot and wide shot is used to see fully how the person is dancing.
Overall close ups, wide shots and long shots are used throughout the music video as these shots are best
used to show the people dancing and their facial expressions. In the same way the rate of the song is quite fast so as the cuts of the shots a quick to show
different shots for one location. Camera movement is regular too. The movement is used to capture many
angles of the people dancing in the shot and to make the video more interesting as the track has a
fast pace.
Camera Angles 2Pull focus used to see both
actors.
Worm’s eye view shot of guy dancing to how superior his dancing is.
Editing Techniques
Adding text to the video such as
‘loading…’ and ‘complete’ helps the audience to understand the narrative better,
(the guy is downloading the
track to his phone).
Editing Techniques 2
Titles and subtitles within the video are edited on.
Transition of the shot from black and white to colour in the same shot. The part where the shot is black and white can be considered as a post-modern element.
The speakers are emphasised bigger to show that the song is playing loud.
Mise en scene Setting:The settings of in the music video are in the studio, the streets a café and alley way. This is shown by wherever the guy goes in the video.Lighting:The music video transitions from day to night. The video uses natural lighting. Then goes back to day time when the stars of the video appear.Costumes:The costumes of the actors are everyday attire/ casual wear.Actors:The actors in the music video are dancers. They are ordinary young people doing freestyle and the Zagada dance.
Ideas to consider for my own music video• I like the idea of the whole music video being performance
based with dancing. I would consider having elements of dancing throughout my music video because Afrobeat typically has dance routines.
• I’ll also consider the camera movement within the video as its steady and moves from extreme heights of the shot being very low and moving very high. This would mean having pan and tilt accurately to achieve this.
• I like the camera shots used in the video such as pull focus. I’ll consider having this within my music video as it will come in handy to focus a particular object.
