Engage the School Community

• We also have full support from our administration, including our principal Pat Lickiss.

• We are not the only service group on campus, there are numerous clubs on campus that are very involved.

• The main support system we have is our Leadership teacher: Sarah Wondolowski.

• Wondo, as we call her, helps us with everything from organizing events to working with the teachers and staff

• All the events we plan could not be done without her.

Engage the School Community

• Some of the noted clubs on our campus are: – Creek Kids Care

– Save Darfur club

– Fashion and Community Service Club

– Key Club…

– …and many more!

• One student in the leadership class is the liaison between clubs and leadership.

• Working with these clubs helps us engage more of the school community about our projects.

Engage the School Community

• We use our monthly news broadcast to the whole school, the Knightly News, to feature the Jefferson Award winners

• In addition, we have a message board in front of school to publicly display the winners and to get the word out about what the Jefferson Awards are and what they mean at Las Lomas

Expand Volunteering at Las Lomas

• For the Jefferson Awards, we pride ourselves on the ability to effectively recognize winners.

• But there are still many students who do outstanding community service, but never receive the recognition.

Expand Volunteers at Las Lomas

• When choosing Jefferson Award Winners we try to look at everything they do, both little and big.

• Knowing there are so many students that are not recognized for their acts of service, we are now trying to track school-wide community service.

• We will be doing this quarterly by having English Teachers survey students to tell us about their community involvement.

Fundraising & The New Walnut Creek Library

• Because the state budget crisis caused the city to divert funds away from the new Walnut Creek library, our big focus this year is fundraising for the project.

• Our efforts are organized into 8 main groups:

1. Elementary Schools Working with the 5 elementary schools to organize fundraising events

2. Middle School Working with Walnut Creek Intermediate Leadership class

3. Big Event Planning an event in our local park to raise funds and awareness

4. Publicity Publicizing events around school and in the community

5. Library Video Created a video for the community with information on the new library

6. Awards Planning the awards for all the different donors

7. Creative Planning other creative events in our community (Girl/Boy Scouts, Restaurants)

8. Book Drive Holding a book donation drive and sales

• As a leadership class we had the privilege of taking a tour of the new library.

• In fundraising for the new Walnut Creek Library, we are also trying to expand our goals beyond our school community.

• We are also partnering with local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops

• We are trying to include every part of our community, including our rival high school, Northgate

Fundraising & The Canned Food Drive

• Having a school with over 1200 students it can be difficult to organize community service events for the whole school.

• One of our major school wide service events was the canned food drive, which took place last November.

• By using the Knightly News and posters we got the word out about the food drive.

• Our main challenge was encouraging students to donate.

• We discovered that people are less likely to give with the current economic troubles.

• We made the drive a competition between 4th period classes for the most number of cans and money collected

• We were pleasantly surprised at how many students donated cans and money to help the food bank.

In the end we collect 2,266 pounds of food for the Contra Costa Food Bank.

Fundraising & The Family Giving Tree

• Another event was our annual Family Giving Tree that we do during the holiday season.

• We had a tree in the main office that has tags with Christmas gifts for needy children in the bay area.

• The drive lasted 2 weeks and in the end we had over 200 gifts.

• And according to the Giving Tree website they helped over 61,000 kids this holiday season.

Fundraising & The Family Giving Tree• We used our skills learned at Jefferson Awards training to reach

beyond the students to their parents.

• Our main donors were parents, so we decided to go through PTSA meetings and the daily bulletin email to tell parents about the Giving Tree.

• With the knowledge learned on how to communicate effectively to adults we were able to get the message out to our school parents.

Growth and Expansion of SIA

• Along with expanding Jefferson Awards in our school, we had goals to expand within our school district.

• We contacted every school in our district about being involved and we received a positive response.

• This year we recruited Miramonte High School in Moraga to the Jefferson Awards Student in Action program.

• We hope to guide and help them get started with the Jefferson Awards.

Innovation and the Future

• Over the past year we have grown as a team to work better together.

• Last year it was just Anna and Natalie, which made it harder to get more tasks done.

• With all eight of us working together, we are able to do more with much more brain power.

• And even though Abby and Natalie will be graduating in June, the Jefferson Awards will be continuing on for years to come!
