The Diploma in the Management of Co-operative at the University of Zululand is the first full time qualification in coop education in the country.

This programme was stated to address the challenge of capacity building for co-operative members.

it is a join venture between the government of the KZN province and the University of Zululand.

The first batch of students was taken in 2011 directly from exist co-operatives throughout 11 districts of the KZN province.

The students would advance in this three year qualification with hopes that after graduation they would go back to their respective co-operatives and try to uplift them. Provincial government has put in a lot of financial resources to support this programme.

There is little inclusion of youth in the board of directors of coops

Where there is inclusion, youth are not offered the same level of treatment or right as that of older board members

Lack of information and education For those with information they find it difficult to

assess capital and markets Co-operatives are not promoted in an attractive way

to young people, hence most youth view coops as just schemes for old poor people.

Lack of powerful youth organisation to represent the interest of youth in co-operatives
