students to catch up with their peers; a programme to strengthen School Management and Development Committees; Kusuma Fellowship programmes in Hardoi, Sambalpur, Warangal and Uttarakhand; the construction of a mid-day meal kitchen in Odisha to feed 100,000 children every day; and Kusuma Resource Centres in Hardoi and Sambalpur to offer educational resources and courses for students, teachers and members of the community.
The Trust collaborates with, and funds, the Kusuma Foundation, our main partner in India. This yearbook provides an overview of the progress made in 2013-2014, including some of the achievements. We intend to build on these achievements as we continue to support these programmes over the next few years.
Our work would not be possible without the support of key government Ministries, departments and officials at State and district levels in India, partner organisations, Head teachers and teachers, and community groups. I would also like to thank the Trustees, staff and advisers of the Kusuma Trust UK and the Kusuma Foundation in India.
The Kusuma Trust UK believes that every child and young person has the potential to transform and improve their life, and should have the opportunity to grow and develop as active and productive citizens in their communities. As an independent grant-making organisation, we facilitate and increase access to quality education and other life opportunities for economically disadvantaged children and young people. Through education we enable young people to realise their potential and break the inter-generational cycle of poverty.
We fund a range of programmes aligned with our strategy in two focus districts - Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh and Sambalpur in Odisha. These include the Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative to implement the government’s scheme, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, in 50 schools; Udbhav, a professional development programme for teachers of English, Science and Mathematics across both districts; a Science in Schools programme to transform Science teaching and learning; remedial teaching to enable

Messagefrom Kusuma Foundation
Mr. Pankaj Vinayak SharmaCountry Leader
Kusuma Foundation
Over the last year, Kusuma Foundation initiated programmes aimed at improving the quality of secondary education in our focus States of Odisha and Uttar Pradesh in India.
The Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative, a whole school development programme, works to identify and promote drivers of quality education in 50 government and aided schools in Hardoi and Sambalpur. The Kusuma team implements the programme with teachers, students, parents, governance boards and communities. Improvements have been made in libraries, laboratories, teaching and learning processes and school governance. Schools now pursue other improvements such as generators to power labs, remedial teaching for students, and substitute teachers to fi ll teacher vacancies.
Kusuma Resource Centres in Hardoi and Sambalpur serve about 300 schools and provide access to teaching and learning materials, computers and the internet for students, teachers and community members.
Kusuma’s Udbhav programme supports the continued professional development of teachers leading to improvements in teaching and learning processes and materials in government secondary schools in Hardoi. Udbhav will be expanded to Sambalpur in 2014-2015.
The Kusuma School and Teacher Awards recognise the best performing teachers and schools in Sambalpur and Hardoi, offering a cash prize and supporting the professional development of teachers. The Kusuma Fellowship programmes in Odisha, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh have provided fi nancial and mentoring support to 843 bright students from poor families to pursue higher education after secondary school. This will expand to Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh in 2014-2015.
Kusuma supported the construction of a Mid-Day Meal kitchen in Odisha that was inaugurated by Hon. Chief Minister, Sri Naveen Patnaik. It will feed 100,000 students of Khurda and Cuttack districts every day at full capacity.
The collective efforts of the Kusuma Foundation and its partners, and guidance from the Board of the Foundation and the Kusuma Trust UK team are the cornerstone of our initial success and we will continue to build upon this in the coming years.
6
In 2013, the Kusuma Foundation established a new programme, the Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative, working with 25 secondary schools in the district of Sambalpur in Odisha and 25 secondary schools in the district of Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. The aim is to raise student attainment, improve teaching standards and enhance the school environment. This five-year programme focuses on the professional development of teachers, building the capacity of Head teachers, providing learning materials and resources for students, and the construction and maintenance of school facilities. The programme is funded by the Kusuma Trust UK.
The programme aims to increase the transition from primary to secondary school and the completion of secondary schooling. It aims to increase the number of students enrolled in follow up education and the number of eligible students in technical and vocational training and employment. The programme also intends to increase community participation in schools and create model schools that the
State government will replicate and roll-out in other districts.
In partnership with Kusuma, each school developed a school improvement plan to identify priorities to improve teaching and learning. The priority interventions for the 50 schools are:
School Facilities• Advocacy with District Education
authorities for completion of school buildings
• Resources for playgrounds, including a compound wall
• Clean and functional toilets for boys and girls
• Dedicated science laboratory with science equipment and consumables
• Electrical wiring and an authorised power connection
• Safe drinking water
• Benches, chairs and other furniture for students
• At least two computers in each school
• Libraries stocked with at least 100 books
Kusuma Schools Par tnership Initiative
7
Teaching• Qualifi ed substitute teachers recruited to
fi ll vacancies
• Continuous professional development for teachers
• Teachers using interactive teaching and learning materials and methods
Learning• Textbooks available for students
• Weekly library period scheduled
• Weekly science laboratory sessions
• Weekly computer classes for students
Governance• Quarterly School Management and
Development Committee (SMDC)meetings during the academic session
• SMDCs complete and implement School Improvement Plans and deliver improvements
ProgressThe immediate priorities for schools are the recruitment of teachers and improvements to facilities. The shortage of teachers means large class sizes and a diffi cult teaching and learning
environment. Toilets in disrepair, a lack of desks and chairs in classrooms and the need for boundary walls around schools are other priorities cited by Head teachers and identifi ed during detailed assessments of the schools. Head teachers and SMDCs also ensure there is active community involvement in schools.
In 2013-2014, Kusuma provided generators to 29 schools, light bulbs and fans to 116 classrooms in 29 schools and 432 desks, benches and carpets to 14 schools. Twenty nine science laboratories were provided equipment and consumables and 50 libraries given books and furniture. A book bank was set up in all 50 schools with 22,200 textbooks for Classes 8 to 10. Forty one schools received toilet consumables and safe drinking water facilities were established in 23 schools.
Kusuma supports the quality of teaching and learning in all 50 schools by assigning volunteer teachers to fi ll teacher vacancies. Volunteer teachers fi lled 450 teaching sessions in Sambalpur and 1,110 sessions in Hardoi. Advocacy with district and State government
8
for the appointment of teachers in sanctioned posts, laboratory assistants and librarians is another strand of the programme. Remedial teaching for Mathematics and English was delivered to 4,000 students in Sambalpur.
Teachers visited high performing schools and training institutes to observe good teaching practices. Quarterly teachers’ network meetings and SMDC meetings were held in both districts.

Kusuma Fellowship programmes support meritorious students from poor families in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand to complete secondary school and pursue higher and professional education.
Selected students from disadvantaged and marginalised backgrounds are given a stipend and academic support to complete their secondary and higher education. Seminars are organised for Fellows on a range of topics such as career guidance, public speaking in English, time management and healthy living. One-to-one mentoring meetings for Fellows provide pastoral care and the opportunity to discuss academic and personal issues. Visits to educational institutions and industry are organised to provide Fellows with an opportunity to learn more about higher education and gain exposure to workplaces and prospective employers.
The Kusuma Ratna Fellowship Programme, implemented by Sambalpur
Integrated Development Institute in Odisha, has supported 493 Fellows from five cohorts since 2008.
Of the 493 Fellows in the programme in 2013-2014:
• 59 fellows have completed professional and technical courses
• 30 fellows are employed after completion of professional and technical courses
The 2013 results of Classes 10 and 12 board examinations show that Fellows have performed better compared to their peers in the district and State of Odisha. 95% of Fellows passed examinations in 2013 and 67% of them scored more than 60%. This is compared with an average of 4% of students achieving results higher than 60% in the district and 13% in the State.
A new fellowship programme has been launched in 2014-2015 in Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh. The Kusuma Excellence Fellowship will support 100 new meritorious students from

The Udbhav programme supports the professional development of Secondary Science, Mathematics and English teachers of Classes 9 and 10 in Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh and Sambalpur in Odisha. The programme aims to improve teacher classroom practices through training, mentoring, school-based support and provision of interactive teaching and learning materials. The programme also aims to improve the attainment of Classes 9 and 10 students.
In 2013-2014, the programme focused on 92 government and government-aided secondary schools in Hardoi and supported the professional development of Secondary Science and English teachers who taught 29,500 students in the district.
The programme developed a pedagogical model, good teaching guide and teacher performance standards. Ten English and 15 Science teaching and learning modules were produced and distributed to teachers. Training was provided on the materials to 230 English
teachers, 199 Science teachers and 170 Head teachers. A secondary school readiness programme was developed for students who needed additional support to catch up with the curriculum.
The programme set up a District Resource Group of peer educators who were trained to provide mentoring to teachers. The programme received the support of the District Inspector of Schools enabling teachers to attend the training and District Resource Group members to travel to schools for mentoring.
In 2014-2015, Udbhav will expand to cover the 25 schools in Sambalpur which are part of the Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative (KSPI). In 2013, Kusuma funded the construction of a centralised and fully mechanised kitchen to deliver mid-day meals to 100,000 children in 190 government schools in Odisha. This modern kitchen and feeding programme is implemented by The Akshaya Patra Foundation.
The Government of India’s Mid-Day Meal Scheme is a national programme supplying free lunches to children in schools to improve their health and encourage them to attend school. Funding from Kusuma supplements the Government scheme to ensure children receive a hygienically prepared, nutritious and hot meal in school every day.
The construction of the kitchen was completed in July 2014 and the kitchen has been fi tted with new equipment including boilers, rice cleaning machines, a cold storage, custom made utensils, conveyer belts and hygienic packing and cleaning facilities. Each day the kitchen cooks 5.5 tons of rice, 3.5 tons of vegetables and 1.2 tons of dal. The cooked food is then transported to schools in custom designed vans that are heat
insulated, dust-free and have the ability to keep the food fresh.
Trial feeding for 3,000 children took place on 25 June 2014 and the inauguration of the kitchen took place on 8 July 2014 in the presence of Mr Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha.
From 31 July 2014, twenty vehicles transport hot and nutritious meals from the centralised kitchen to 45,000 children daily. The kitchen will cook up to 60,000 meals from November 2014 and 100,000 meals from January 2015.

Science in SchoolsIn 2013, Kusuma supported a Science in Schools project, implemented by Agranee Jana Kalyan Anusthan and Eklayva, benefitting 4,500 students in 25 schools in Sambalpur, Odisha. The aim of the project was to promote interest in, and understanding of Science concepts through practical experiments. 400 science kits were given to schools to enable students to carry out practical experiments. 50 Science teachers were trained to deliver practical science lessons using the kits. Science competitions, a science exhibition and educational visits were also organised for students.
An evaluation of the project showed that the science examination pass rate in the 25 schools increased from 64% in 2012 to 75% in 2013. Five schools, five teachers and 25 students were recognised for their high performance in Science and awarded prizes. At the end of the academic year, all 25 schools had functioning science laboratories. Interest in science has increased, with both teachers and students reporting higher levels of motivation in classes.
Remedial TeachingIn partnership with Agranee Jana Kalyan Anusthan, Kusuma supported remedial classes before and after school for 4,000 students in English and Mathematics in 25 government schools in Sambalpur
50 teachers and 50 volunteer teachers were trained and given supporting teaching and learning materials. 21,000 sessions were conducted during the academic year. A Resource Group comprising of five Mathematics and five English subject experts monitored the remedial classes and provided onsite support to the teachers.
In English, 49% of Class 8 students passed annual examinations in 2014 compared with 20% in 2013. For Class 9 students, the pass rate in English was 31% in 2014 compared with 15% in 2013. 75 top performing students were awarded prizes based on their academic performance and attendance.
