Key Concepts -Q Magazine
Institution
Q Magazine is produced by Bauer Media. Bauer Media also publish Closer and produced the television channels The Box 4music, the radio stations Absolute Radio and Cool fm.
Q is produced once a month. Q makes money through subscriptions, advertisements and sales. The magazine attempts to retain its audience through every so often having limited editions
and having exclusive CD compilations or having whole magazines based on one group for example. This would help rack in a wider audience as people who don’t usually buy but are fans of artists in limited editions of Q would buy it.
Media Language
Q is quite an all round genre magazine, it features indie, pop and rock. I would describe it’s style as quite quirky and fun. The magazine includes regular features such as crosswords, subscriptions and essential
tracks of the month.
Audience
Q has a generally older target audience, so mainly adults read it. From July-December 2015, 44,050 issues were bought. The founders of Q made the magazine for the older generation whom they felt were left out
as they were still buying CD’s instead of downloading music online. Q has a website which has information about the magazine and holds competitions every
so often. Q has a generally older target audience so these people are more likely to go to the shop
and actually pick up a physical copy of the magazine, rather than teenagers and young people who would be more likely to just read it for free online.
Representation
Q Magazine doesn’t really focus of one particular genre and includes a range, for example pop, indie and rock. It has quite a minimalistic and structured look, whereas Kerrang! for example is very in your face and original.
Key iconography associated with the genre are festivals such as Glastonbury and artists such as Arctic Monkeys and other indie bands or also pop stars such as Katy Perry.
