About JLPT

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is an internationally recognized test to measure and certify the Japanese Language Proficiency of persons whose native language is not Japanese. JLPT is organized jointly by The Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges & Services (JEES) , Japan.

JLPT certification is the most valued in terms of recognition of Japanese Language skills and abilities.

JLPT certification is not only an academic credit but also preferred graduation qualification at many Japanese companies.

Certification Eligibility Criteria

Education Background

Not specified; but a bachelor’s degree or a global equivalent is preferable.

Language Background

The candidate must be a non-native speaker of Japanese language i.e. the mother tongue should not be Japanese.

Physical abilities Background

The examination has a section for “Listening Comprehension” and persons with hearing disabilities will not be able to take the same.

However, if the candidate submits a valid medical certificate to the examination authority, this section may be excluded.

Certification Level

There are 5 levels in JLPT and candidate may opt for any level, irrespective of the past certification level.

Study Hours needed (ref. only)

-N5 = 150 [easy] -N2 = 600-N4 = 300 -N1 = 900 [hard]-N3 = 450

The ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain degree.

Reading : Ability to read and understand specific contents of everyday topics.

Ability to grasp summary information such as newspaper headlines.

Ability to grasp difficult contents if alternative phrases are available.

Listening : Ability to listen and comprehend coherent conversations

in everyday situations, spoken at near-natural speed.

Ability to follow the contents and grasp the relationships among the people involved.

Intermediate Level Japanese grammar for higher comprehension

Everyday conversations at various situations to a certain degree

Vocabulary and phrases (around 3000 words) used in daily life

Kanji (around 600 kanji), radicals, strokes and special readings

Idiomatic usages, simple proverbs, comprehension with alternate vocabulary or structure.

Comprehension of coherent conversation at near native speed

Understanding the relationships of people and items from various passages and conversations

Introduction to polite forms, letter writing, essays and summarizing

JLPT Exam Overview

JLPT Exam Dates : First Sunday of July and December, every year.

Total Score : 180 (Reading : 120, Listening : 60)

Question section-wise Min. Score : Language Knowledge : 19/60 (N1, N2, N3) Reading : 19/60 (N1, N2, N3) Listening : 19/60 (All levels) Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading : 38/120 (N5, N4)
