Future of mineral sands exporters from Port of Portland Iluka Resources established the exporting of mineral sands from Port of Portland in 2007. There are two further mineral sands companies developing businesses in Victoria and Port of Portland is bidding for their business: Donald Mineral Sands based in Minyip Australian Zircon based near Horsham 15 16. Rail All the mineral sands exported from Port of Portland is currently transported to Port by truck in a mixture of B-doubles (45 tonnes payload) and High Productivity Vehicles (51 tonnes payload). Iluka Resources does use rail from Hopetoun to its mineral separation plant at Hamilton. There is investigation to see if the rail line from Hamilton to Portland, currently used for grain exports, can be used for transporting mineral sands. Australian Zircon is considering the possibility of transporting mineral sands by rail. 16 17. Issues We are now in our 8th year of exporting and importing mineral sands. Our issues: Flexibility of facilities as the markets and resources change regularly, our facilities must be flexible Capacity of storage and the density of different sands Dust management contamination of adjoining cargoes Radiation management compliance and perception Different particle sizes need different approaches Moisture management 17 18. Issues (continued) Sheds are ideal but are more expensive (plus need for piling) Port land requires minimum volume commitment how to achieve this with the changing product mix?18 19. The future The future is bright with continued mining of mineral sands in Victoria and southern NSW Supply chain providers need to work more closely with the mineral sands companies Regular customer meetings are a must because the supply chain must deliver as market requirements change Flexibility is the key to keeping the customer happy 19
