Chemistry can be the easiest subject or toughest depending on how you have approached your JEE preparation. Every year many students lose ranks because of chemistry. There is one peculiar thing about chemistry that is no one gets average marks or should we say no one gets mediocre marks. Either students get very good marks or they score poorly. This happens because of the vast course and lack of proper guidance or direction.

What follows is an analysis of the chemistry section of JEE Mains 2013 that will enable JEE aspirants properly plan their approach to the JEE Mains 2014 chemistry paper.

Overall Analysis

JEE Mains 2013 chemistry section had 30 questions of 4 marks each totaling to 120 marks. For each wrong answer a penalty of one negative mark was imposed. Below are some the key points to note:-

Some Key Features of JEE Mains 2013 Physics section:1. Most of the questions were moderately tough and overall paper was student friendly.

2. Breakup of marks as per difficulty level was - Easy - 44 marks, Medium - 60 marks & Tough - 16 marks

3. Uneven distribution: From many topics questions were not asked

4. Be aware of mistakes: There were errors - as one question had no correct option and another had 2 correct options. Mistakes in the paper are possible, answer to your best and move on

5. Factual questions: a few were asked such as question related to Bhopal Gas Tragedy

6. Most important concepts were covered

7. Most of the questions were in accordance with NCERT text books.

8. Compared to previous year: Organic chemistry was easier, Inorganic chemistry was tougher and physical chemistry was of same level.

Major Topic Analysis

The chart clearly shows that topics from both 11th (64 marks) and 12th standard (56 marks) were given equal importance. However, if we go by major topics there are some differences, for example physical chemistry from 11th was given twice as much weightage compared to 12th standard topics. On the other hand, the exact opposite is seen when organic chemistry section is considered. The inorganic chemistry covered same number of marks from both standard 11 and 12.

Let’s look at each section’s marks distribution: Physical Chemistry - 40 - Class 11 (2/3rd) Class 12 (1/3rd)

Organic Chemistry - 30 - Class 11 (1/3rd) Class 12 (2/3rd)

Inorganic Chemistry - 30 - Class 11 and Class 12 in equal proportion

Last Minute Tip: Keeping this in mind you could choose to cover physical chemistry first, Then organic chemistry followed by inorganic chemistry (the last topic does require some memorizing so better done at the end)

The JEE chemistry portion is vast. Proper topic-wise analysis will help to prepare your study plan. Let us look at some of the salient features of chemistry section in JEE Mains 2013

1. Topics left out in 2013: Many topics are not covered in organic chemistry from 12th standard like carbonyl compounds, alcohols etc. Given their importance these may feature in the 2014 paper.

2. One important physical chemistry topic - solutions - seems it didn’t appear in the paper BUT it did! Along with mole concept questions.

4. Chemical bonding: It’s obvious from the previous chart but to make it abundantly clear - chemical bonding is very very important.

5. Surface chemistry: Don’t leave surface chemistry as questions were very easy (conceptual) and covered approximately equal marks as some major concepts.

6. General organic chemistry is perhaps more important than hydrocarbons.

7. D-block vs. P-block: D-block should not be left thinking its a small topic in comparison to P-block.

8. Mole concept is very fundamental so should be top priority.
