Essential Question:What did the Jamestown settlers learn from their
mistakes and how did they turn those mistakes into success?

Virginia Stock Company = workers and upper class gentlemen.
• Not prepared for long term.• Near a swamp w/mosquitos = malaria. • Interaction with Powhatan Indians was
tense and unstable.• Gold on the Brain, no one worked for food.

1609 – The Starving Time• John Smith injured, returns to England• Still no order, people will not work for
survival of colony• Cannibalism!• Disease, food shortage, and Indian
attack wiped out most settlers down to 60.
1610-Salvation by Tobacco

1619 Jamestown Survives – Becomes Virginia
