GOLDEN TEMPLE, AMRITSAR

The Golden Temple, known as the Darbar Sahib or the Hari Mandir, is the most

celebrated Sikh shrine situated in Amritsar.

The foundation stone was laid by Hazrat Mian Mir of Lahore, a friend and

admirer of Guru Arjan, in 1588A.D.

Darshini Gate

On the western banks of the tank is a two storeyed building known as Darshini Deorhi.

• The ground floor has the management offices in the side wings of central doorway

• The Darshini Gate is 66’ in length and 36’ in width.

• The first floor contains the Tosha Khanna (temple treasury). It has 3 openings on

each side of its side wings, At the top are 4 chhatris, one each in the middle of all four

sides

• All the chhatris are roofed with decorative fluted domical tops.

The Causeway

• The causeway or bridge that leads to the Hari Mandir is 202’10”long and 21’

wide.

• The bridge is constructed on 8 large and 35 small spans, which are known as

Swarg Dwaries

• The bridge was constructed by Mohd. Yar and his brothers of Amritsar who

were well reputed craftsmen of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s time.

Main Sanctuary

• The main sanctuary of the Hari Mandir is in square structure.

• The building has one rectangular doorway from each of its four sides.

• The doors of eastern and Western were plated with silver by Maharaja Ranjit

Singh in 1830A.D.

• Exactly on the top of central hall of main sanctuary, is the third storey in the

form of a square room having three gates.

• Finally there springs the low fluted gumbaz having lotus petal

motif in relief at the base and inverted lotus at the top, which

supports the Kalasa having a beautiful chhatri at the end.

Architectural Features

The Dome:

Almost all important Sikh shrines have an imposing visual effect because of the types and forms

of the domes.

The dome of Golden Temple, Amritsar is unique not only in view of its imposing size and

dignified grandeur but also due to interesting formation of its domical superstructure.

The dome represents the synthesis of all important characteristics of the shape and details of

ornamentation noticed in the domes of other shrines.

PATNA SAHIB • Takht Sri Patna Sahib is one of the Five Takhts of Sikhism

and the birthplace of the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Gobind Singh.There are five other Gurdwaras in Patna which are related to different Sikh Gurus.

• The Gurdwara at Patna sahib was in remembrance of the birth place of guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth guru of the sikhs on 22 December 1666,and like many histroical gurdwara in India and Pakistan ,this gurdwara too, was built by maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780 -1839) ,the first maharaja of the sikh empire, on the banks of ganga river , in Patna ,Bihar.

GURU – KA -TAL • Guru ka Taal is a historical Sikh pilgrimage place

dedicated to the memory of ninth Guru Sri Guru Tegh Bahudar ji. Guru ka Taal is near Sikandar in Agra (U.P). The Gurudwara was built over the place where the Guru Tegh Bahadur laid down his arms to offer arrest to Aurangazeb, the Mughal Emperor. Several devotees gather every year to pay homage to the great Sikh guru in this Gurudwara.

• It was a Taal (reservoir) in the area near Sikandra. It was built in 1610 AD to collect and conserve rainwater in Agra during Jehangir reign.

• The water of the reservoir was used for irrigation purposes during the dry season.

• This place Guru Tegh Bahadur laid down his arms to offer arrest to Aurangazeb.

• The Gurudwara called Guru Ka Taal was built in 1970s due to the contributions and arduous efforts of Sant Baba Sadhu Singh ji "Mauni".

• Takht Sachkand Sri Hazoor sahib and also known as Abchal Nagar , is one of the five Takhts In Sikhism.

• It is located on the banks river Godavari at the city of the Nanded in the state of the Maharashtra.

• It is where the 10th Guru , Guru Gobind Singh Ji completed his last breath.

• The structure is built at the place of death of Guru Gobind Singh Ji . The inner room of the gurdwara is called the Angitha Sahib and is built over the place where Guru Gobind Singh was cremated in 1708. The construction of the gurdwara was done from 1832 to 1837 by order of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji (1780–1839).

300 years (Gur -Ta- Gaddi) Celebrations at Hazoor Sahib, Nanded

In 2008, the 300'th Gurudomship Ceremony of Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji and 300'th Death Anniversary of Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji were celebrated on a grand scale at Hazoor Sahib, Nanded. Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh also addressed to the Sad-Sangat on the main event function. To publicize the event the "Jagriti Yatra" was arranged which travelled through different cities across the country and also some places in abroad.

Laser & Dancing Musical Fountain Show • Recently, a laser-ray show has been started at "Gobind Bagh" near the

Main Gurudwara. In this show the lives of the Ten Gurus are briefly and very beautifully described. The show became very popular in a short period not only in Sikhs (local or visitors) but in people of other religions as well. Show has been conceived & directed by Jasbir Singh Dham, music & commentary is by Jagjeet Singh.The show timings are 07:30 pm to 08:30 pm daily.
